Daughters
John Mayer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know a girl
She puts the color inside of my world
But, she's just like a maze
Where all of the walls all continually change
And I've done all I can
To stand on her steps with my heart in my hand
Now I'm starting to see
Maybe it's got nothing to do with me

Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters, too

Oh, you see that skin?
It's the same she's been standing in
Since the day she saw him walking away
Now she's left cleaning up the mess he made

So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters, too

Boys, you can break
You'll find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong
And boys soldier on
But boys would be gone without warmth from
A woman's good, good heart

On behalf of every man
Looking out for every girl
You are the God and the weight of her world

So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters, too
So mothers be good to your daughters, too
So mothers be good to your daughters, too

Overall Meaning

In John Mayer's song Daughters, he sings about his own experience with a girl who he perceives to be difficult to understand. He describes her as a maze in which the walls are continually changing, making it difficult to navigate. He relates to his struggles in trying to understand her and win her heart, but as he begins to step back and reflect, he realizes that maybe it has nothing to do with him.

The song also contains a powerful message about the relationship between fathers and daughters. Mayer implores fathers to be good to their daughters, recognizing the profound impact that they have on their daughters' lives. The song highlights the idea that the way fathers treat their daughters can shape the way that they form relationships in the future, as they become lovers and eventually mothers themselves. Similarly, he encourages mothers to be good to their daughters as well, recognizing the important role that they play in their children's lives.

Overall, the song is an emotional and introspective look at both personal relationships and larger societal issues, particularly the dynamics of parent-child relationships.

My mom kept me from my dad from age 3 until I was 26. He is a wonderful man and I am so thankful for him. Why she did this I will never understand. He is now 76 and I am 53. Married 34 years now to my high school sweetheart. My kids were grown and never had to feel the pain of a missing parent. Cycle broken.

I'm confident John Mayer's aware that, if fathers love their daughters as they should, they won't run into the arms of a loser, or look for the love, that they should've gotten from their fathers, from a boyfriend who can't give them that. Fathers, love your daughters right and they will have healthy relationships.
