Hail Mary
Pomplamoose Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh Mary I'm not coming home too soon.
Tell all our babies that daddy has gone to the moon.
My feet were sold to this winding road.
My feet were sold, baby, long ago.

Oh Mary I've left you a pile of dough.
Under the floor boards near Billy-Joel's radio.
Baby I love you, but there's no chance.
Baby I love you, but where's romance?

Little Rock, I'm on my way to San Jose,
Driving at 90 an hour. The Devil knows me.

Oh Mary I think of your eyes every day.
If I could see them I surely would not run away.
When we were young there was so much time.
When I was young there was so much time.

Little Rock, I'm on my way to San Jose,
Driving at 90 an hour. The Devil knows me.

My feet were sold to this winding road.
My feet were sold, baby, long ago.

Little Rock, I'm on my way to San Jose,
Little Rock, I'm on my way to San Jose,
Little Rock, I'm on my way to San Jose,
Driving at 90 an hour. The Devil knows me.

Oh Mary I'm not coming home too soon.
Oh Mary I'm not coming home too soon.
Oh Mary I'm not coming home too soon.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pomplamoose's "Hail Mary" tell a story of a man who has left his partner, Mary, to pursue a life on the road. He tells Mary not to expect him back anytime soon, and to tell their children that "daddy has gone to the moon". Despite having left a "pile of dough" hidden under the floorboards for her, and professing that he loves her, he admits that there is "no chance" for them, and laments the lack of romance in their relationship. He thinks of her often, and wishes he could see her eyes, but acknowledges that he has already committed his feet to this winding road.

The awkward "oh we're clapping? okay we're not clapping anymore" and the lunch dishes on the piano bench just make the video part of this so much better. :)

Ah, I miss this version of Pomplamoose. Their current stuff is still quite nice, but I just love the soulfulness of this.

@krnxbuddha

Jacks probably just busy with patreon haha

@sherrynoff

their newest stuff is kinda like this, just a little more live

@sSereth

Agreed... it's a shame. I hope they start making more original work soon.

@qwertydeluxe

Still the most well-crafted, best Pomplamoose song. The weird lyrics, the grooving time signature, the slightly sinister ambience, the rich chord progression, the expert use of accordion…. I could go on. This was the first Pomplamoose song I ever heard and I’m still in love with it.

Who’s here 15 years later? Long love Pomplamoose ❤️

Nearly 11 years later and I still can't get enough of this song.
