I Knew You When
Late Night Alumni Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello
Tell me how have you been?
I didn't think
I'd see your face again
And it shows
All the years that have passed
Memories fade,
Emotion seems to last.
Look how the spark
Never leaves
Its we who choose to die
Look how the fire
Only cools
It's we who lose desire.

Hello
I knew you when
How nice it is
To see your smile again.

look how the spark
Never leaves
It's we who choose to die
Look how the fire
Only cools
It's we who lose desire.

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics of Late Night Alumni's song "I Knew You When" detail a chance encounter between the singer and someone they used to know. The vocalist expresses surprise at seeing this person again after believing they would never cross paths once more. The passage of time is evident in the lyrics as memories have faded, but emotions connected with the person remain present. Despite the time since their last meeting, the "spark" between them still exists, but only "we" - the individuals themselves - can extinguish this flame. The singer revels in the moment of seeing a familiar face, remarking at how nice it feels to see the person's smile again.

This is my favorite song by LNA, particularly accompanied by a scotch on the rocks, a melancholy mood and the repeat button.

Hey Late Night Allumni, if you guys ever feel interested in doing hip-hop sampling/remixing of your own music, 1:15 to 1:19 would make a killer chorus or verse sample. Has a nice smooth old school feel if paired with classic percussion styles of the 90's 2000's era hip-hop. I'm not a producer anymore, but I still catch onto great sample potential every now and then. Cheers.
