loved Strawberry Letter 23 since i was a child
and was really surprised that i did not know of Shuggie until I wa s a young adult
or that it was his song
since i had grown up on the Brothers Johnson version ❤

but i think many musicians have known him always
I heard of him the first time, while watching a film, over 30 years ago,
a character in the film mentioned him in this tone
and in this poetic way that made me so curious
I did not even remember if they actually featured his music in the film,
or what the film was...
It was just a passing moment,
nothing to do with the story itself
but the reverential tone they used stuck with me
and made me wonder
at that time
why i never heard of him

Shuggie Otis is one of the dope-est artist of the 70's. The Rolling Stones asked him to join their group in the 70's to which he turned down. He's the son of R&B great Johnny Otis. Dopeness squared.Shuggie Otis brought me here!

I'm from San Francisco and his dad Johnny Otis is from Vallejo, CA. Johnny Otis moved next door to a friend of mine in Sebastapool in Sonoma County! He was entirely of Greek decent, but he"identified"as being black! An interesting concept, especially now! So many people "identify " as being from the opposite gender; is it so different from "identifying" as being of a different race?

However, in the mid-Seventies, singer-songwriter Shuggie Otis got just such a call from Stones touring pianist Billy Preston, who asked if the psychedelic soul musician wanted to join the band on their upcoming tour. However, Otis was fresh off the release of his much-labored-over 1974 album Inspiration Information, so he did what few would do and turned down the offer.
