Overall Meaning

The song "Sweet Thang" by Shuggie Otis is a beautiful homage to the beauty of women. The lyrics repeat the refrain "Oh baby, sweet thang," emphasizing the singer's admiration for his beloved. The singer repeats this line, almost as if chanting a mantra, as if he cannot get enough of expressing his appreciation for this woman's beauty.

The song's melody is also mesmerizing, with gentle guitar riffs and a smooth, calming beat. The simple melodic structure of the song ensures that the emphasis remains solely on the lyrics, and the message they convey. This is a song that can be appreciated not just for its sound, but for the love and affection that is expressed through its lyrics.

that is a great story ...

loved Strawberry Letter 23 since i was a child

and was really surprised that i did not know of Shuggie until I wa s a young adult

or that it was his song

since i had grown up on the Brothers Johnson version ❤

Shuggie s version is glorious

and one can imagine how in love he was when he write,
or as the story i heard goes

i hear a lot of comments by music lovers that they never heard of him until recently
but i think many musicians have known him always

I heard of him the first time, while watching a film, over 30 years ago,
a character in the film mentioned him in this tone
and in this poetic way that made me so curious

I did not even remember if they actually featured his music in the film,
or what the film was...

It was just a passing moment,
nothing to do with the story itself

but the reverential tone they used stuck with me
and made me wonder
at that time
why i never heard of him

he does not "own rights"...Shuggie was paid by honest people like Beyoncé ...
hopefully paid by Brothers Johnson for Strawberry Letter 23, the most well known obvious copy
even though i am sure his sampling is unlimited ...

Shuggie Otis is one of the dope-est artist of the 70's. The Rolling Stones asked him to join their group in the 70's to which he turned down. He's the son of R&B great Johnny Otis. Dopeness  squared.Shuggie Otis brought me here!

I never heard that before , hmm Rolling Stones asking Shuggie Otis to join the band . hmmmmmm

I'm from San Francisco and his dad Johnny Otis is from Vallejo, CA. Johnny Otis moved next door to a friend of mine in Sebastapool in Sonoma County! He was entirely of Greek decent, but he"identified"as being black! An interesting concept, especially now! So many people "identify " as being from the opposite gender; is it so different from "identifying" as being of a different race?

Sunita Koneru

Shuggie Otis is half black, his father Johnny Otis, also a blues cat, was 100% Greek.

@Sunita Koneru
You are 100% correct ! :)

SHUGGIE OTIS ON DECLINING OFFER TO JOIN THE ROLLING STONES
The chance to join the Rolling Stones is an offer that comes around approximately. . . never. However, in the mid-Seventies, singer-songwriter Shuggie Otis got just such a call from Stones touring pianist Billy Preston, who asked if the psychedelic soul musician wanted to join the band on their upcoming tour. However, Otis was fresh off the release of his much-labored-over 1974 album Inspiration Information, so he did what few would do and turned down the offer.

This is beyond genres. This is pure alchemy in the best way. What a talent! He is criminally underrated

"CRIMINALLY" is the perfect word!!! 🤯 I just found out he originally did Strawberry Letter 23 today 🤦🏼‍♀️ That's how I found this song. It's sad he didn't get the recognition
