Cherry Bomb
The Runaways Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't stay at home, can't stay in school
Old folks say, "You poor little fool"
Down the streets I'm the girl next door
I'm the fox you've been waiting for

Hello, daddy, hello, mom
I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb
Hello world I'm your wild girl
I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb

Stone Age love and strange sounds too
Come on, baby, let me get to you
Bad nights causing teenage blues
Get down ladies, you've got nothin' to lose

Hello, daddy, hello, mom
I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb
Hello world I'm your wild girl
I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb

Hello, daddy, hello, mom
I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb
Hello world I'm your wild girl
I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb

Hey, street boy, want some style?
Your dead end dreams don't make you smile
I'll give you something to live for
Have you and grab you until you're sore

Hello, daddy, hello, mom
I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb
Hello world I'm your wild girl
I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb
Cherry bomb
Cherry bomb
Cherry bomb
Cherry bomb
Cherry Bomb

Overall Meaning

The Runaways' song "Cherry Bomb" is a rebellious anthem about a young girl who is tired of conforming to societal expectations of staying at home and going to school. The singer is the girl next door, but she wants to break free from her mundane life and be the "fox" that everyone desires. She welcomes attention from men, and her provocative nature is shown through her lyrics ("I'll give you something to live for/Have you and grab you until you're sore").

The chorus, "Hello, Daddy, hello, Mom, I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb/Hello world, I'm your wild girl, I'm your ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb," is a defiant statement of her identity as a young woman who won't be silenced or tamed. Her "stone age love" and "strange sounds" are a rejection of the traditional expectations of feminine behavior and a call for individuality and expression.

Overall, "Cherry Bomb" is a bold and energizing song that encourages young women to embrace their wild side and challenge societal norms. It celebrates female empowerment and the freedom to express oneself.

Hello, everyone -- thought I'd clear something up for you. The reason the lip-synching on this isn't great is that this recording is from our first album and we weren't told in advance we were going to be doing this. We had been, at that point, performing the song a little differently live for some time. Cherie was given no time to listen to the record or to rehearse singing along to it. We just showed up, did a couple of takes and that was that. (And yes, that's me on bass in this video, not Michael Steele).

@@carolineferreira4420 Thank you, Caroline. Here's a little secret -- you can play almost any bass line to this song just as long as it's got some rhythm.

I'm always blown away by how deep Cherie's voice is at 16 years old! She had that rock and roll voice.
