Battle Cry
Omen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Catch a fleeting glimpse then be on your way
Oh the end is near if you choose to stay
This forsaken land torn by grief and strife
No it's not worth the value of your life

[Chorus:]
The smell of death lingers in the air
Bloodstained bodies scattered everywhere
In the distance thunder in the sky
See the sorrow, hear the battle cry, battle cry

The carnage races on well into the night
As the sun creeps up we see the morning light
On the battlefield the tragedy of dawn
Through the crimson tide we still carry on

[Chorus:]

Overall Meaning

In Omen's song Battle Cry, the lyrics describe a scene of war, urging anyone who catches a glimpse of it to leave quickly because the end is near. The land is described as forsaken, torn by grief and strife, and the value of one's life is not worth staying there. The chorus paints a brutal picture of death and destruction, with the smell of death in the air and bloodstained bodies scattered everywhere. The distant sound of thunder adds to the ominous atmosphere, and the sorrow and desperation of the battle cry can be heard.

Despite the tragedy and carnage, the lyrics also emphasize the resilience of those fighting in the war. The fighting races on through the night, with only the morning light signaling a pause in the action. Even in the midst of the crimson tide of battle, the fighters carry on.

Overall, the song can be seen as a commentary on the devastating effects of war, both in terms of physical destruction and the toll it takes on human lives. The lyrics urge listeners to recognize the futility of such violence and to work towards peace instead.

I saw these guys in concert back in the 80s. I was like 15. They were hanging outside the venue and I got to meet and chat with them.  I was carrying this album (in cassette!) inside my blue jean jacket and they autographed it for me.  Great friendly dudes.  Great old jams too.
