Don't Look Around
Mountain Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't look around
'Cause I'm never coming back
It's high time
You saw the last of me

You thought I was a whiner
I'd forgotten where to go
I had no place to lay my head to rest
I had to go

Don't look around
'Cause I'm never coming back
It's high time
You saw the last of me

Whoah
Had to change my mind
You're going to change my mind
Now I'm working all day long
I'm singing for my food
Baby, you know that I've got everything I need

I've given all I can
The rest belongs to me
Fact was it didn't matter
Just who I had to be

Don't look around
'Cause I'm never coming back
It's high time
You saw the last of me

Whoah
Had to change my mind
You're going to change my mind

I'm gunnin' right on through the town
Don't need you anymore
Now I think I'll turn my back and walk away from you

We're livin' in the country
Doing everything we please
I don't want you comin' round swirling up a be

Don't look around
'Cause I'm never coming back
It's high time
You saw the last of me

Whoah
Had to change my mind
You're going to change my mind

They are working hard and singing for their food, but they are happy and fulfilled. The line "I've given all I can, the rest belongs to me" shows that the singer has taken control of their life and is ready to live it on their own terms.

The final verse describes a new setting for the singer, a move to the country. It seems they have found peace and freedom there and want to keep it that way. They don't want any reminders of their past life to come back and disturb them.

Why can't we have incredible bands like this in 2020? Seriously, why? This is raw power that never gets ordinary. R.I.P. Leslie and Felix.

You nailed it

@whtpwr

There are good bands now, but they're not getting signed and promoted by the big labels.

Man these guys are working hard here! It feels like they're fighting to control the song itself - as though it has an existence entirely of its own - and they're holding on for dear life to deliver it. Four of the most intense minutes of power rock from Leslie, Felix, Steve and Corky!

@derunsympath

Playing, studio lights, drugs. RocknRoll is a sweaty thing.

I couldn't have put it better, brother. I mean, DAMN, that is a performance. So almost mercilessly heavy and it did seem like they were just barely holding on to some out of control rocket wildly careening into the unknown. A truly monolithic sound and highly underrated by the current purveyors and afficionados of heavy music.

@@davidgetman1250 Spot on man. This is heavy rock 101, the blueprint for any young band that wants to comprehend the rudiments of the genre and run with those lessons for their own sound. And it was all perfected over 50 years ago! No posturing or posing in this performance, just precision, power and hard work.
