Smoking
Bill Hicks Lyrics

Chicago 18
I Believe (Bill Champlin)
I used to be the first one to cry
So afraid of a lonely tomorrow.
Heartache was all that I had
To call my own- so all alone.
You came along and gave to my life
Something more than the pain and the sorrow.
Now that you're with me, we'll never be alone,
In love, in love.
CHORUS:
I believe
In the love that you gave,
I believe
In the life that you saved,
I believe how you make me feel
Today
I believe in you
Night after night, I waited alone
For something deeper than yesterday's feelings.
Never believing that love would ever come
To me- oh no.
Then there was you, and out of the blue,
Once a heart that was broken was healing.
Love is the reason we'll never be alone,
Oh no- oh no
CHORUS
I still believe,
Believe in something right.
'Cause I love you for believing in me.
I believe in you.
CHORUS
The lyrics to Bill Hicks's song "Smoking" convey the comedian's views on smoking and the tobacco industry. The song starts with a monologue by Hicks, where he talks about how smoking is not just an addiction but also a conspiracy by the government and corporations to keep people stupid and docile. He talks about how the tobacco industry has been manipulating people for years and how people are falling prey to it by buying into their propaganda.
The lyrics then go into the chorus, where Hicks repeats the words "smoking, smoking" several times, as if to emphasize the message of the song. He talks about how smoking is not just a choice but also a way of life for some people, and how it has been glamorized by the media and Hollywood.
The song is a poignant commentary on the dangers of smoking and serves as a wake-up call to anyone who is still smoking or thinking about starting. It is both powerful and emotional, as Hicks's words are imbued with his trademark wit, humor, and insight.

I met Bill back in 1989 at a comic book convention in New Jersey. He asked me, "How many cigarettes a day do you smoke?" I told him that I had never tried them before. He told me I looked like I should be a smoker and gave me a pack of Camels. I was nine years old. Man... I sure do miss that guy.
