This is really, really challenging music.

If I were being totally honest with myself, I don't know if I even really like it that much as compared to Returnal or Memory Vague, purely on an ease-of-listening level. It's hard to listen to in a lot of places; it's uncomfortable, it's chaotic, it's cacophonous. It's difficult to get tuned into, but when you do, you begin to hear all these textures, timbres and genres interacting and these flourishes of really beautiful melodies and atmospheres, and it becomes something really special. I think that's what makes it so addictive. I personally haven't been able to stop thinking about it since yesterday, when I heard it for the first time.

In a world where easy music is increasingly created by committee, for mass appeal and pumped out for profit generation, it's exciting to hear something fresh - even out of place. Something that engages your brain and forces you to actually think about what you are listening to, rather than just passively consuming it. And I think that makes for a better track.

I also think the shady world OPN has created as a backstory for all this is really immersive and adds spectacularly to the world of this album.

+SQUIZZLER24 Just as a fun quick update, I went to see him play this live in a set and it was one fuck of an experience. Even thought I was absolutely wasted out of my mind and thought I had pretty much forgotten everything about it, just listening to the album previews brought it all back to me. It was a completely different experience to the set tracks on the album though and when they were combined with the visuals and the atmosphere in the place (I saw him in Village Underground, which is a club made up from some industrial warehouse/railway bridge arches/shipping container type business, FYI) it felt like the whole room was transformed into the world of Garden of Delete.

Basically, if you get the chance to see this album played in a live set, for the love of all that is holy do it. But don't shout "PROBLEM AREAS!" at the absolute top of your druken, semi-conscious voice when he comes on for his encore like I did, because that is a massive dickmove and I'm really sorry for that if you happen to see this, man.

But what I am suggesting, based on studies, that you can research, is that music is important to people, and what is important to you is based on your personality which is a construct of your environment. To put into a larger perspective, look at top 40 songs, that are mostly all pop and hip-hop, both associated with high extroversion, which is a favorable trait in our culture. Part of this extrovert, salesman like culture promotes sex and materialism and that's what you can find on the radio. It's also about emotional arousal. Think about songs with lyrics that have emotional attachment - you may find that most of the lyrics could be applied to your life and seem more relatable to you, and for somebody who doesn't relate, may not like the song as much. (ex. Conscientious people are less likely to listen to rebellious rock, while they are also more likely to be considered conformist. Rock vs Conformity)

There can be more than one level of meaning. The album is titled Garden of Delete / G.O.D., so the connection isn't exactly a stretch. I'm not saying there's anything profound to be gleaned there, either. Just an observation.

+lucas arteta I (an organist) and a friend with a Masters in trumpet performance & an obsession with theory had a loooong conversation with Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) over the finer details of work by a wide array of composers, including Krzysztof Penderecki, Charlie Parker, Debussy, Anthony Braxton (who himself is a music scholar and professor), and Satie. At every point in the conversation, Lopatin proved himself knowledgeable and insightful. Therefore, I think that since whatever is missing or seemingly errant in Lopatin's music as OPN doesn't stem from any lack of knowledge of music theory and music history on the composer-performer's part. That is, given Lopatin's level of musical competency, it follows that the music of his OPN project sounds the way it does because Lopatin has purposefully cultivated a style specific to particular goals.

The specificity and purposefulness of this is evidenced by the fact that Lopatin's contributions to collaborative projects span a wide range of formal attributes. So OPN represents only a fraction of his musical aptitudes and interests. I think it's clear that we have to keep in mind the fact that there's a "Why" behind why his OPN music is this way and that we have to separate this music and its "Why" from any assumptions or generalizations about the composer-performer. Perhaps his OPN project may, at times or more frequently, fall short of being well-crafted and compelling. I do think certain elements deserve praise, e.g., at his best, he can synthesize excellent timbres and he sometimes works very well with space. But, you know, it is what it is.

I think you'd enjoy listening to a music called deef. He's working on some sort of doctorate in music over in Austria. He makes weird, often whimsical and sometimes humorous, electronic music with a fair bit of formal complexity.
