Monticello
The Dillinger Escape Plan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Watered down
Letters of hate
Creep in on me
I've watched that water
Drip into mud
As charred fingers stab
At my eyes
No regrets can touch this soul
Cause I'm a devil,
In a three-piece suit
That good old green
Paint on paper
Prostitute
For now four walls closing
Stabbing at my fate
Soon dirt starts staring
Down that barrel
Turning water into wine
It never seemed so sweet
Turning faith into blind
It never was so easy

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of The Dillinger Escape Plan's song Monticello seem to depict a feeling of vulnerability - the feeling of being soaked in hate that seems to penetrate through every pore. The reference to water being drip-fed into mud is an apt metaphor for how the smallest of things can become magnified and weigh us down completely over time. The image of charred fingers stabbing at the eyes suggests a sense of hopelessness and despair, as if everything one holds dear is slipping through their fingers, leaving nothing but rubble in its wake.

The persona in the song seems to take a perverse pleasure in his own wickedness - he is a devil in a three-piece suit, the good old green paint on paper prostitute. This image seems to suggest a great deal of self-awareness, as if the persona is fully cognizant of his own faults and failings but is powerless to resist them. The four walls that are closing in on the persona seem to be symbolic of the world he has built for himself, one that is built on a foundation of lies, deceit, and treachery. It's as if his fate is being carved out for him even before he realizes it, and that he is powerless to stop it. The turning of water into wine and faith into blindness seems to suggest a great deal of disillusionment with the world - it is as if the persona is acknowledging that everything is not what it seems, and that the very things he used to believe in are now just empty vessels that have lost their substance.

Damn! I used to have this on a tape back in the day. The best record they put out, in my opinion... more hardcore than metal!
