Last Night I Nearly Died
Duke Special Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't put this off forever
I've got to tell you some time
But when I try and say it
My mouth just gives up and dies

I lose my meaning
When I get this feeling

Last night I nearly died
But I woke up just in time
Last night I nearly died
But I woke up just in time

I'm not who you think I am
I slipped a stranger inside
It helps the nights go quicker
But I diminish each time

And in the morning
I shake the warning

Last night I nearly died
But I woke up just in time
Last night I nearly died
But I woke up just in time

I lose my meaning
And I get this feeling

Last night I nearly died
But I woke up just in time
Last night I nearly died
But I woke up just in time

Last night I nearly died

Overall Meaning

Duke Special's song "Last Night I Nearly Died" has a haunting yet relatable melody that makes listeners feel as though they are experiencing the emotions firsthand. The song opens with the artist acknowledging the difficult conversation they need to have with someone, but they continue to avoid it, unable to find the words. The struggle to communicate is palpable, and the use of the phrase "my mouth just gives up and dies" captures the frustration of being unable to articulate one's thoughts and feelings.

As the song progresses, Duke Special reveals that they have been leading a double life, one that is vastly different from the person their loved ones believe them to be. The artist admits that they have been pretending to be someone else, slipping "a stranger inside," to make the nights go by faster. However, this behavior is causing them to lose themselves, diminishing their sense of self.

In the chorus, Duke Special describes a harrowing experience, where they "nearly died," but somehow managed to wake up just in time. This line can be interpreted in many ways, but at its core, it seems to suggest that the artist has reached a breaking point, and they need to face the truth about their life to avoid slipping further away from themselves.

Overall, "Last Night I Nearly Died" is a powerful yet vulnerable exploration of the difficulties in communicating and the toll that hiding one's true self can take. Through the use of metaphor and vivid imagery, Duke Special has created a song that stays with the listener long after the final note fades away.

Anoche casi muero
duque especial

Anoche casi muero,
pero desperté justo a tiempo.
Anoche casi muero,
pero desperté justo a tiempo.

tengo este sentimiento
tengo este sentimiento
me desperté
me desperté
me voy a despertar me voy a
despertar

Pierdo mi sentido cuando tengo este sentimiento

Oh, anoche casi muero,
pero desperté justo a tiempo.
Anoche casi muero,
pero desperté justo a tiempo.

Anoche casi muero
Anoche casi muero
Anoche casi muero

A great song and a sound bloke. Met him and his Mrs in Letterkenny. Couldn't get more down to earth people. If you've not seen him live, please do, its a surreal, great experience!

I first saw Duke Special supporting The Divine Comedy in Nottingham when this track was released. A second gig, again in Nottingham was performed by the whole band literally ‘on’ the bar at the request of the audience. Incredible. The third time was at a Christmas concert in Oxford with the wonderful Boo Hewerdine. You are a unique, wonderful and supremely gifted man composer and musician. Many thanks. 🌞🙏🇬🇧🌞

Best live performance I've seen in a very long time by anyone, Glee Club, Birmingham, UK. Great stuff. He even crowd surfed, despite the fact that everyone was seated!
