I Can't Help Myself
Orange Juice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I always thought I could
Fall from a height
Land on my feet
Now I'm considering
Throwing in the towel
Admitting defeat
Just like the four tops
I can't help myself
I can't help myself
I can't help myself
I can't help myself

Nothing worth finding
Is easily found
Try as we might
That was supposed to sound
Very profound
It probably sounds dry
Just like the four tops
I can't help myself
I can't help myself
I can't help myself
I can't help myself
Myself myself myself

Just like the four tops
I can't help myself
I can't help myself
I can't help myself
I can't help myself
I can't help myself
I can't help myself

I felt I had to tell the world
About you
I felt I had to tell the world
About you
Yes I felt I had to tell the world
Tell the world
Tell the world
I can't help myself
Tell the world
Tell the world
Tell the world about you, baby
I can't help myself
Tell the world
Tell the world
C'mon c'mon c'mon
C'mon c'mon c'mon
I can't help myself
I can't help myself
Tell the world
Tell the world
I can't help myself

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Orange Juice's song "I Can't Help Myself" are about admitting defeat after believing that you could handle everything by yourself. This is represented in the opening lines, "I always thought I could / Fall from a height / Land on my feet." The singer is realizing that perhaps they cannot always come out on top and are considering "throwing in the towel" and admitting defeat.

The song also touches on the idea that the things worth finding are not easily found. The line "Nothing worth finding / Is easily found" depicts that sometimes people have to try really hard to find things that are valuable to them. The lyrics then somewhat mock the idea of sounding profound as they admit that their statement "probably sounds dry."

The chorus uses the lyrics "Just like the four tops / I can't help myself / Myself, myself, myself" to draw a comparison between their inability to resist their feelings towards someone (like the Four Tops' inability to help themselves) and the fact that ultimately, they can only rely on themselves to make decisions.

Overall, "I Can't Help Myself" is a song that deals with themes of defeat, self-reliance, and the difficulty of finding something worth having.

Same here, got into them about 2 year ago through a girl I was seeing, she was into this and the style council massively. I knew of orange juice mainly because of Edwins big 90s hit a girl like you and been a big jam fan I had a strange dislike of the style council, now both bands are massively played by me and the girl has left. I call that a win win because the music is great and she was a bit dull. Good taste in music though
