Somewhere Down the Road
Barry Manilow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We had the right love at the wrong time
Guess I always knew inside
I wouldn't have you for a long time

Those dreams of yours are shining on distant shores
And if they're calling you away
I have no right to make you stay

But somewhere down the road
Our roads are gonna cross again
It doesn't really matter when
But somewhere down the road
I know that heart of yours will come to see
That you belong with me

Sometimes goodbyes are not forever
It doesn't matter if you're gone
I still believe in us together
I understand more than you think I can
You have to go out on your own
So you can find your way back home

But somewhere down the road
Our roads are gonna cross again
It doesn't really matter when
But somewhere down the road
I know that heart of yours will come to see
That you belong with me

Letting go is just another way to say
I'll always love you so

We had the right love at the wrong time
Maybe we've only just begun
Maybe the best is yet to come

'Cause somewhere down the road
Our roads are gonna cross again
It doesn't really matter when
But somewhere down the road
I know that heart of yours will come to see
That you belong with me

Overall Meaning

Barry Manilow's "Somewhere Down The Road" is a melancholic song about a love that was perfect, but unfortunately ended too soon. The first verse highlights the inevitable knowledge that the relationship will not last long. The chorus offers a glimmer of hope that their paths will cross again in the future. The verses, along with the chorus, cleverly use the same phrase "Somewhere down the road" as a way of depicting a continuation, a future meeting which could still happen.

The second verse is particularly insightful as it deals with the aftermath of separation and the struggle to let go of someone you still love. The tone shifts slightly, becoming more encouraging, with lines like "Sometimes goodbyes are not forever" and "Maybe the best is yet to come." The bridge of the song is particularly moving; it highlights the idea that letting go is a form of love, "letting go is just another way to say, I'll always love you so."

The song's nostalgic feel and carefully crafted lyrics make it a timeless classic. Though it was released in 1981, the nostalgic and relatable theme of the song makes it relevant to listeners of all ages.

This song tells my story perfectly, it discribes how our love was then, just the wrong time, and how our love feels today when now finally might be the right time, we may be back in each others arms soon, ,which would be a miracle.....My amazing story starts after I lost my wife of 40 years and believe it or not my first love from 50 years ago lost her husband of 20 years around the same time, almost magically we found each again through friends and family and have fallen back in love again, feels like the same love we had over 50 years ago, we've been talking for hours now for over 2 years and still haven't met yet, nervous and scared we are planning to meet soon to see what God has planned for us in the future, I'll keep you posted, Steve
