This is my favorite part of the show. Roger and Mimi are 2 people experiencing the exact same thing. They have the exact same death sentence of a disease that they know for a fact will kill them. She's choosing to live her life, while he's just existing, trying to leave some sort of legacy with one good song. Mimi represents everything about his past, both the good and the bad, and he's fighting that internal battle from start to finish.

Yeah, Roger is feeling a whole host of emotions. He wants to lash out, but doesn't want to lash out. He wants to love her, but is afraid to get attached knowing that he'll die soon enough. He's angry, frustrated, sad, depressed, lonely, and desperate. He even seems almost happy that he can add in some sarcasm when he questions whether souls are a thing, using it like you said to try to mask the other emotions he's feeling. She represents everything from his past, the good and the bad, and he so desperately wants her, minus the drugs, but doesn't think he deserves it.

It goes without saying that the chemistry between these two is phenomenal, which is good because it's so damn important with these characters. It felt like they put everything they had into this performance, because they knew it was going to be the last time they'd be doing it, and with it being professionally recorded it would last forever.

On a personal note, I would have found it utterly impossible to not fall in love with Renee if I was playing Roger across from her for any length of time. Every one of her songs just hits me a little bit harder, especially with the facial expressions and other little things she does to make the role her own. It's not even just the serious stuff, but the sarcastic tone she adds during Light My Candle and how offended she gets when he talks about her job. Even the little hiccups they each have in Light My Candle feel natural and perfect, with Will stumbling over his words as he almost forgets a line, perfect for how awkward Roger is in that moment, and Renee almost breaking character when Will put his hands above his head as he sang about the handcuffs.

Will Chase is without a doubt my favorite Roger. He gets the fear and uncertainty across more effectively than any other that I’ve seen, while still delivering the bad boy charm Adam Pascal brought to the role. It’s certainly different than other portrayals, but his performance is captivating.

I love Renee for her voice. But her voIce doesn't fit Mimi. Mimi is a teen but Renee has an amazing controlled voice with outstanding shapes to ger vowels. Hell, her voice is more controlled than her partners in this scene. She just sounds more mature. She doesn't sound younger than her scene partner.
