I'd Rather Sleep
Kero Kero Bonito Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel so funny these days
I'd rather sleep than stay awake
Trees used to talk to me
Now I know what's real and what is fake
Now I know what's real, what's fake
Rather sleep than stay awake

Are we from outer space?
This starts to feel like the right place
Ever tried anything
Just to be a kid once again
Just to be a kid again

Now I know what's real, what's fake
Rather sleep than stay awake
Just to be a kid again
La la la la la la la

Overall Meaning

In Kero Kero Bonito's song I'd Rather Sleep, the lyrics portray a sense of detachment from reality and a longing to escape into sleep or childhood. The singer admits to feeling "funny" and prefers to sleep rather than stay awake, indicating a desire to retreat from the world. The line "Trees used to talk to me" could suggest a previous time of innocence or magical thinking. However, the singer now knows what's real and what's fake, possibly indicating a loss of that innocence.

The song also introduces the idea of being from outer space, which could be interpreted as feeling like an outsider or not fitting in with society. The sentiment of wanting to be a kid again is a common theme in modern pop culture, as it represents a time of freedom, imagination, and innocence. The line "Just to be a kid once again" highlights a longing for the past, perhaps a simpler time with less responsibility.

@freeobotpls

the song doesnt really have any suicidal/depression-esque lyrics, so in my opinion, its just a nice little song that perfectly fits the feeling sadness about the childhood that is gone

My personal interpretation:

- Note that, along with the song's title and the line "Just to be a kid again", another line is also repeated throughout the chorus: "Now I know what's real what's fake".
-- In my opinion, this holds great importance in the song's theme: the contrasting "real" and "fake" can be referring to "practical" - symbolizing the more realistic life as an adult, and "imaginary" - symbolizing the more ethereal life as a kid.
-- This essentially means that, as the singer grows up, they learn to be practical while slowly lose grasp on their own creativity.

- Four of the lines in the song can be interpreted differently with this logic:
-- "Trees used to talk to me" refers to the singer's imaginations in their youth. Personifying inanimate objects occurs often in children when they play with their toys or "imaginary friends".
-- "Are we from outer space" can be a question the singer's childish self is asking. They are questioning why the practical world feels so alien after growing up. "Outer space" can be referring to the imaginations since it is generally appealing to many children. (Every kid once wanted to be an astronaut...)
-- "Just to be a kid again" refers to being able to imagine again.
-- "Rather sleep than keep awake" refers to dreaming, entering a world created in your own mind, rather than facing reality.

Remember, I am not trying to disprove any other theories as being wrong, and this is just my personal opinions. Thank you for reading because this comment miiiight be a bit long and very confusing.

@senyulove8350

Y'all are gonna forgive me, but I feel like this talks about depression, most specifically, about one of it's characteristics traits, that is to sleep to forget your problems.
"I feel so funny this days."
She feels sad and unmotivated, but she doesn't know how to express it.
"I'd rather sleep than stay awake."
Obviously, to foget her problems, she rather sleep.
"Trees used to talk to me."
I think that this is a metaphor, about how when she used to be younger the world used to be like fantasy, and how her mind used to be so much cheerful and happy.
"Now I know what's real and what it's fake."
She means that know she can see that the world isn't and never was how she used to remember, it's completely sad to her.
"Now I know what's real and what it's fake, I'd rather sleep than stay awake."
In here is a cycle, she feels unmotivated to see how much problems she has as an adult, so she decides to sleep to forget her problems.
"Are we from outer space? This doesn't feel like the real space." She starts to sleep less than before 'cause she starts to have existencial crisis because of her insomnia.
"And we'll try anything, just to be a kid, once again."
She realizes that she has depression, and she feels disappointed, at the point that the only thing she wants is to be a kid again.
And here it ends the storie, repeating the cycle of not being able to solve her problems so she decides to sleep, and only wanting to be a kid again.

It's an unpopular fact that people who want so bad to grow up end up being the saddest people
