December
Regina Spektor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

December starts on Sunday
Next Sunday, won't you feel happier then?
Turn your room upside down,
Turn your down upside...
Rumors have started that you are in love again,
Rumors that are completely unsubstantiated..

Come on and say you're sorry,
Real sorry for the trouble that you caused,
Can't you see all this love...?
Can't you see all this love......?

Come on and say you're sorry,
Real sorry for the trouble that you caused
Can't you see all this love?
Can't you see all this love?

We are not evacuating this house,
We don't believe in you and your wrecking crew.

We are not evacuating this house,
We don't believe in you and your wrecking crew.

We don't believe in you and your wrecking crew

We don't believe in you
We don't believe in you,
We don't believe in you
We don't believe in you,
We don't believe in you...
We don't believe in you.

Overall Meaning

Regina Spektor's song "December" is a melancholic, yet hopeful portrayal of the end of a year and the start of a new one. The first lines "December starts on Sunday, Next Sunday, won't you feel happier then?" showcase a desire for change and hope, and it seems like the singer is looking forward to a better future. However, the second verse contradicts this sentiment with the "rumors" of love, which are "completely unsubstantiated." This line implies that hope can sometimes be pointless when the reality is not as we wish it to be.

The repeated lines "Come on and say you're sorry, Real sorry for the trouble that you caused" show a yearning for resolution and peace. The following line "Can't you see all this love" emphasizes the singer's willingness to forgive and move on with love. However, the repeated lines might also indicate the singer's frustration with someone who refuses to apologize for their wrongdoings, which is a common feature in relationships.

The final section of the song serves as a defiant statement against those who might cause harm and destruction to the singer and their loved ones. The lines "We are not evacuating this house, We don't believe in you and your wrecking crew" are a brave statement of defiance and resistance to the forces that might disrupt their peace. The final repeated line "We don't believe in you" holds the weight of the singer's determination in refusing to buckle under pressure.

Overall, "December" is a poignant and moving song that encapsulates the bittersweet emotions that come with the end of a year and the start of a new one. It's a reminder that even when facing uncertainties, there's always hope for a better future.

@sundancekiki

how did she make the music sound like december? one of the greatest artists of our generation. more people should know of her.

@slivertoe

This song feels like when you live away from your childhood home and then you come back for Christmas and feel like an outsider because while you've changed, your family is still pretty much the same and not much interested in the personal growth you've experienced while you were away. And yes, I am TOTALLY making that interpretation based on my own experiences, so what the hell do I know? ha ha

@alicewonderbread

Love this song. Gives me chills. Describes moments of life perfectly.

@SnowingWolfGirl

This song actually sounds like winter. Regina is amazing :D

@ambermarie97

Sometimes you hear a song so perfect that you become completely engrossed, and when it finally ends you realize you're crying.

@TheToeBrand

Must be one of the most underrated songs right now.. I can't believe that this song only has about 6000 views! I think it's one of Regina's best songs.. Love it! :)

a lot of people think this is about how people get depressed in the winter but for me it has the opposite effect. I get way sadder than normal during summer. Winter is my happy time.

@juliomontoya8824

I actually am way more active and willing to do stuff on windy or cold days.I get lazier on warm and sunny days. I hate sunny days.

@dreamingsophie5792

for me it' just the other way round. If I can go outside wearing only shorts and t-shirts any time of the day, I feel much better than in winter ... also more alive I guess...
but it's really interesting what kind of effect winter has on you, i don't think I know anyone else who feels this way about winter :)

@user-kh9ki3kq8m

It's that time of year again...
