Knifeman
The Bronx Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wanna be original,
I wanna be surrounded by art,
but everything is digital,
the formulas are fallin' apart.

They riot in the streets because there's not enough money to share.
Is the burden of fame,
just a universal cross we can bear?

But out here on the borderline,
you've got to hold it together!
You've been deprived of dedication.
You've been condemned by your dreams.

Is it as bad as it seems?
And can you pull the hook from your mouth?
Do you want to feel the breeze before the air you breathe finally runs out?

We're divided it seems,
this is a diary of life in between.
This is obese and obscene.
This isn't music,
it's a pyramid scheme.

And out here on the borderline,
you've got to hold it together!
You've been deprived of dedication.
You've been condemned by your dreams.
And out here on the border line,
it feels a lot like forever!
We'll all be damned if this machine turns life into routine.

Thieves have taken the crown!
Melted it down!
Kept it near to the ground!
Now they're praying for sound!

And I don't know what's found...

'Cause we used to be gifted,
and persistent!
Now we're bored,
reminiscent!
We used to laugh without misery,
spoon-fed our desire!

We've lost our fire!
And now they won't remember our names!
Our days are mixed in the crowd,
and our nights are spent fanning the flames.

And out here on the borderline,
you've got to hold it together!
You've been deprived of dedication.
You've been condemned by your dreams.
And out here on the border line,
it feels a lot like forever!
We'll all be damned if this machine turns life into routine.

(Dead and gone, we're dead and gone)
Thieves have taken the crown!
And have melted it down!
Thieves have taken the crown!
And now they're praying for sound!

Overall Meaning

The Bronx's "Knifeman" discusses the struggle to maintain originality in an age dominated by digital technology and formulaic structures. The singer expresses a desire to be surrounded by art and originality, but everything is becoming more systemized and less creative. The riots in the streets due to economic inequality bring up the question of whether fame's burden exists universally.

The song takes on a darker, more intense tone as it progresses, with language that suggests a feeling of entrapment and helplessness. The sense of being deprived of passion and purpose is conveyed through images of a hook in the mouth, suffocating air, and the loss of fire. It's as if the singer is someplace uncertain and in-between, looking for a way out of the digital monotony.

The song culminates with the repeated refrain of "Thieves have taken the crown," suggesting that those in power have stolen something elemental and important from the people. The song is a powerful exploration of the loss of creativity and originality in a world where the commercialization of art becomes more prevalent each day.

Dead Ass

@fishinwithguns

the vocals/lyrics and the gradual layering of the guitar riffs over the main simple riff are what make this song incredible...and well everything else really...amazing underrated band

@gregwangan

@Ristism

I worked with them as stagecrew on a festival... these guys are the fucking real deal, can't get any more rock "n roll. They showed up with 2 guitarcases and a snare drum....

@brandonadkins6781

I cannot believe I have just now discovered this. I can't turn it up loud enough!

@dxwoodwardx

Right? It's literally the best song. It hits so hard and crescendos in all the right places. It has the best energy. Verse 1 starts chill with each instrument slowly popping in with that baller drum riff, then verse 2 all together with hard hitting energy, then by that colossal bridge where Matt is just yelling solo as it kicks right into verse 3 as each instrument hits somehow harder than verse 2.
I feel the same way, this song is one that needs to bang the ear drums and piss off the neighbors.
I'm seeing them again tomorrow and I'm going to be walking home with Joey's drumstick.
