She's Funny That Way
Erroll Garner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once she dressed in silks and lace, Owned a Rolls Royce car
Now she seems quite out of place, like a fallen star
Draped around my kitchen sink , Happy as can be
I just have to stop and think, Why she fell for me.

I'm not much to look at, nothing to see
Just glad I'm livin' and lucky to be
I got a woman crazy for me
She's funny that way.

I can't save a dollar, ain't worth a cent
She doesn't holler she'd live in a tent
I got a woman crazy for me
She's funny that way.

Tho' she loves to work and slave for me ev'ry day
She'd be so much better off if I went away.

But why should I leave her, why should I go
She'd be unhappy without me I know
I got a woman crazy for me
She's funny that way.

She should have the very best, Anyone can see
Still she's diff'rent from the rest, satisfied with me.
While I worry plan and scheme, Over what to do
Can't help feeling it's a dream, Too good to be true.

Never had nothin'; no one to care
That's why I seem to have more than my share,
I got a woman, crazy for me,
She's funny that way.

When I hurt her feelings, once in a while,
Her only answer is one little smile,
I got a woman crazy for me.
She's funny that way.

I can see no other way and no better plan,
End it all and let her go to some better man;
But I'm only human, coward at best
I'm more than certain she'd follow me west,
I got a woman crazy for me,
She's funny that way.

Overall Meaning

Erroll Garner's "She's Funny That Way" is a song that speaks to the nature of love and dedication. The first stanza introduces us to the woman in question who used to be very wealthy but is now, in the singer's eyes, out of place. She's draped around the kitchen sink, happy in her home, and the singer is confused as to why she chose to be with him. The chorus is a reflection of how the singer sees himself. He's not much to look at, but he's lucky to have a woman who is so devoted to him.

The second stanza explores the woman's devotion to the singer. She's willing to work and slave for him every day, even though she'd be better off without him. The singer knows this and expresses his desire to leave her, but he can't bring himself to do it. The woman seems content with what little she has, and the singer knows that he's more fortunate than he deserves.

The final stanza is a confession of the singer's love for the woman. He knows he's not the best man for her, but he can't imagine leaving her. The possibility of finding someone better is enticing, but the singer knows that the woman would follow him anywhere. The song ends with the repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the singer's gratitude for the woman's love.

There are a lot of pianists out there that can play some really good music, classical music but this man had something no one else has, unique way of playing just different.

You said that Perfectly.! Erroll was so special, a total enigma, brilliance, and a master of the keyboard.

Jazzinthecountry

What is it about Erroll? The intros, the slurs, the embellishments, the right hand chords, rock steady left?
Nope, it's his pure humanity. A skill that most musical geniuses possess.

Terry Hammond

Yes, the others are great… but, when all is said and done, Erroll Garner remains the greatest. Period!

Sorry, I meant to say that Erroll Garner's performances are always such a rich musical experience for his audience. He is both a great virtuoso jazz pianist and a peerless entertainer.

I like the way he does a "fake stride" in his left hand, acting as his own metronome, if you will, to strike a slow pulse. Amazing. I've never seen that done before.

I agree

Autumn Leaves

For those of us too young to have heard the great man live, it is wonderful to see these uploads. My favourite jazz pianist and the one that gets the gold medal on the podium of jazz pianists. he left us a musical gold mine too. RIP to Erroll Garner 1921 to 1977, died far too young.
