Look On Down From The Bridge
Mazzy Star Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's still fountains down there
Look on down from the bridge
It's still raining, up here
Everybody seems so far away from me
Everybody just wants to be free
Look away from the sky
It's no different when you're leaving home
I can't be the same thing to you now
I'm just gone, just gone
How could I say goodbye
How could I say goodbye
Goodbye
Maybe I'll just place my hands over you
And close my eyes real tight
There's a light in your eyes
And you know, yeah, you know
Look on down from the bridge
I'm still waiting for you
In Mazzy Star’s song Look On Down From The Bridge, the lyrics express a sense of loneliness and detachment, as the persona looks down at the world from above. The first two lines convey the idea of the world continuing to spin below, with fountains and rain still present, despite the persona feeling removed from it all. The subsequent lines reveal a sense of isolation as the persona notes that everyone seems to be far away and wanting to be free. This adds to the sense of detachment, as if the persona has lost touch with the people around them, and is left to observe from afar.
The next few lines continue the theme of separation as the persona describes how leaving home and looking away from the sky makes no difference. This suggests that the feeling of detachment is not limited to a specific place, but something more internal. The persona acknowledges their own absence from the lives of others, and mourns the loss of belonging. They express a desire to hold on tightly to someone, perhaps to find some kind of connection or solace. The final lines repeat the refrain of looking down from the bridge, but with a shift in tone as the persona reveals that they are still waiting for someone, suggesting that they still have hope for connection.
Overall, the lyrics of Look on Down from the Bridge convey a deep sense of sadness and separation. They use imagery of a bridge and looking down to create a powerful metaphor for the distance between the persona and others, as well as their own internal struggle to connect.

@HamburgerTime209
I just realized completely randomly at work
while fetching shopping carts in the parking lotthat this song is about suicide.The name "Look on Down From the Bridge" means the speaker is literally looking off of a bridge from which she's about to jump from.
"Look on down from the bridge,
There's still fountains down there.
Look on down from the bridge,
It's still raining, up here."
She's saying it looks so much better at the bottom of the bridge (dead) then it does up on the bridge, where it's still raining.
(Says some dark things about Morty's state of mind as well if they chose a song about suicide to play whilst he thousand-yard stares into the camera, then cut to black. Damn I love that show.)
@IveGotToast
HamburgerTime209 I actually think it's about someone who has committed suicide and is waiting for their loved one to do the same.
Everybody seems so far away from me...I'm Just gone, just gone
