Amity
The Gathering Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The torture won't part you
Motherly breast won't warm you
You fail and foam from your mouth
why is it so loud, this sound?

All the sense your are capable of
does not seem to save you
You heed the glance of a smile
Was it impossible to float for a while?

Restless is carrying fever
burning you to pieces
In search and need of a friend
Will I bow down to this in the end?

I lay in the hands of my maker
and I want to spend the rest of it awake
Why do I get the feeling they'll brake it
It's a fight it's a fight

The torture won't part you
Mothers lap can't seem to warm you
You strain, you climb up and frown
Why is it so loud, This down?

All the sense you are capable of
does not seem to save you
You heed the glance of a smile
Was it impossible to float for a while?

I lay in the hands of my maker
And I want to spend the rest of it awake
Why do I get the feeling they'll brake it
It's a fight it's a fight

Overall Meaning

The song "Amity" by The Gathering is a powerful and emotional piece that explores the struggle of a person in search of comfort and peace in a world full of chaos. The opening lines depict the failure of worldly comforts to provide solace to the person who is experiencing pain and torment. Despite their attempts to seek refuge in the arms of a motherly figure, they are unable to find the warmth and comfort they desire. The repetition of the line "Why is it so loud, this sound?" adds to the sense of confusion and desperation.

The verse "All the sense your are capable of does not seem to save you" suggests a loss of rationality and a feeling of helplessness. The person's vulnerability is further emphasized by the way they are swayed by a fleeting smile. The chorus speaks of the restlessness that comes with feverish dreams and the need for a friend. In the midst of this inner turmoil, the person reflects on their mortality and the desire to embrace life fully with their eyes open. However, there is a fear that these aspirations may be crushed, leading to a fight for survival.

The song encapsulates the feeling of being lost and searching for purpose and meaning. The lyrics convey a sense of vulnerability, loneliness, and a desire for connection. The repetition of phrases and the subtle changes in the melody and dynamics of the song build a sense of intensity and urgency which reach a climax when the song ends abruptly. Overall, "Amity" poignantly captures the chaos and struggle that comes with navigating life's uncertainties and challenges.

Those vocals are just wow! Such a jazz quality to it and never heard any clean vocals in this genre anywhere near this good. Floor Jansen probably the best female vocalist when it comes to versatility in metal and Tatiana Shmaylyuk is probably the best female vocalist when combining clean vocals with growls but when it comes to just pure clean vocals, Anneke Van Giersbergen is in a league of her own.

This is something that could not be said in a better way, I totally agree this
