It Ain't Me Babe
#BobDylan Lyrics

Go 'way from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'm not the one you need
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who's never weak but always strong
To protect you an' defend you
Whether you are right or wrong
Someone to open each and every door
But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe

Go lightly from the ledge, babe
Go lightly on the ground
I'm not the one you want, babe
I will only let you down
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who will promise never to part
Someone to close his eyes for you
Someone to close his heart
Someone who will die for you an' more
But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe

Go melt back in the night
Everything inside is made of stone
There's nothing in here moving
An' anyway I'm not alone
You say you're looking for someone
Who'll pick you up each time you fall
To gather flowers constantly
An' to come each time you call
A lover for your life an' nothing more
But it ain't me, babe

No, no, no, it ain't me, babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe

Overall Meaning

In "It Ain't Me Babe," Bob Dylan is rejecting a woman's advances for a serious commitment. At the beginning of the song, he urges her to leave his window and make her departure at her own pace, because he knows he cannot be the person she desires. The woman seeks a man who is always powerful and can fight for her, regardless of whether she's right or wrong. Someone who can open all doors for her. But Dylan admits that he's not the one. He clarifies that he can't deliver on all the promises she's looking for. He's merely a man with his own flaws, and he cannot grant her the stability and strength she craves, that he will let you down in the end.

Dylan, later on, reemphasizes the point by saying he's not the ideal knight in shining armor either "who'll pick you up each time you fall." He does not hold the qualities of a lover, which the woman needs. Dylan is aware that the woman is seeking an individual who is going to be her true love, her companion, and her defender throughout life, but he proclaims that he is not "It" and she cannot expect him to be. Finally, he asks her to simply "go melt back into the night," as everything in him is made of stone.
