Restless Farewell
#BobDylan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, all the money that in my whole life I did spend
Be it mine right or wrongfully
I let it slip gladly to friends
To tie up the time most forcefully
But the bottles are done
We've killed each one
And the table's full and overflowed
And the corner sign
Says it's closing time
So I'll bid farewell and be down the road

Oh, ev'ry girl that ever I've touched
I did not do it harmfully
And ev'ry girl that ever I've hurt
I did not do it knowin'ly
But to remain as friends
You need the time to make amends
And stay behind
And since my feet are now fast
And point away from the past
I'll bid farewell and be down the line

Oh, ev'ry foe that ever I faced
The cause was there before we came
And ev'ry cause that ever I fought
I fought it full without regret or shame
But the dark does die
As the curtain is drawn and somebody's eyes
Must meet the dawn
And if I see the day
I'd only have to stay
So I'll bid farewell in the night and be gone

Oh, ev'ry thought that's strung a knot in my mind
I might go insane if it couldn't be sprung
But it's not to stand naked under unknowin' eyes
It's for myself and my friends my stories are sung
But the time ain't tall
Yet on time you depend and no word is possessed
By no special friend
And though the line is cut
It ain't quite the end
I'll just bid farewell till we meet again

Oh, a false clock tries to tick out my time
To disgrace, distract, and bother me
And the dirt of gossip blows into my face
And the dust of rumors covers me
But if the arrow is straight
And the point is slick
It can pierce through dust no matter how thick
So I'll make my stand

And remain as I am
And bid farewell and not give a damn

Overall Meaning

Restless Farewell is a somewhat introspective and reflective song that communicates the singer's feelings about his past actions, relationships, and life in general. The song begins with the singer reflecting upon all the money he has spent throughout his life, whether rightfully or wrongfully obtained, and how it slipped away gladly to friends to tie up time most forcefully. The bottles are now done, and the singer has to bid farewell to move down the road. The singer is saying goodbye to an easy life that he previously lived.

The second verse speaks of the many girls he has touched, specifying that he has not hurt them an intentionally. The singer believes that he will remain friends with all of them if given the opportunity. He acknowledges that if you wish to stay friends, you need to take the time to make amends. However, he is moving on, and now that his feet are fast, he has to say goodbye, an indication that he and his former lovers are unlikely to remain in touch.

The third verse speaks of the singer's past fights, where he acknowledges that every foe he ever faced had a cause that he fought full, without regret or shame. He understands that, like the dark, his cause is also dying, and he must bid farewell in the night and be gone. The last verse communicates the singer's reflection on the many thoughts that have strung a knot in his mind, with an understanding that he may go insane if this knot is not sprung. It's not for other people but for himself and his friends that he has sung his stories. The singer acknowledges that no special friend possesses any word or expression. Though times may change, the singer knows that he will meet again, and he bids farewell till that time.

Oh, all the money that in my whole life I did spend Be it mine right or wrongfully I let it slip gladly to friends To tie up the time most forcefully But the bottles are done We've killed each one And the table's full and overflowed And the corner sign Says it's closing time So I'll bid farewell and be down the road
I spent all my money, whether earned rightfully or not, on my friends to make the most of our time together. But now the bottles are empty, the night is over, and the establishment is closing, so I must say goodbye and move on.

Oh, ev'ry girl that ever I've touched I did not do it harmfully And ev'ry girl that ever I've hurt I did not do it knowin'ly But to remain as friends You need the time to make amends And stay behind And since my feet are now fast And point away from the past I'll bid farewell and be down the line
I never intended to hurt any of the girls I've been with, and it takes time to reconcile with them and to become friends. Since I'm moving on and leaving the past behind, I must say farewell.

Oh, ev'ry foe that ever I faced The cause was there before we came And ev'ry cause that ever I fought I fought it full without regret or shame But the dark does die As the curtain is drawn and somebody's eyes Must meet the dawn And if I see the day I'd only have to stay So I'll bid farewell in the night and be gone
Every enemy I've had had a cause that existed before we met, and every cause I've fought, I did so with full dedication and without regret. Eventually, darkness dies, and when the dawn approaches, it's time to leave and say farewell, possibly for good.

Oh, ev'ry thought that's strung a knot in my mind I might go insane if it couldn't be sprung But it's not to stand naked under unknowin' eyes It's for myself and my friends my stories are sung But the time ain't tall Yet on time you depend and no word is possessed By no special friend And though the line is cut It ain't quite the end I'll just bid farewell till we meet again
All the thoughts that have troubled my mind would drive me insane if I couldn't let them out. But I don't want to be vulnerable in front of others; I tell my stories for my own sake and for my friends. Although the time seems short, you rely on it, and no one can truly claim some specific moments for themselves. Although our connection may be cut, it's not over entirely, and I will say farewell until we meet again.

Oh, a false clock tries to tick out my time To disgrace, distract, and bother me And the dirt of gossip blows into my face And the dust of rumors covers me But if the arrow is straight And the point is slick It can pierce through dust no matter how thick So I'll make my stand And remain as I am And bid farewell and not give a damn
A fake clock is trying to affect my life, by shaming and distracting me. Gossip keeps flying around and rumors clings to me, but if my aim is true, I can cut through anything, no matter the obstacles. I'll make my stand, stay true to myself, and bid farewell without caring about what others think or say.

Magnificent version of the traditional Scottish song: "The Parting Glass".

La mayoría de sus canciones son profundas. Y su voz ayuda aumentar el interés de escucharlas. Todavía tenemos la suerte de poder disfrutarlo en vivo.

J'aime beaucoup cet album. Le poète chante par nécessité, mais jamais pour lui seul. Il clame haut et fort la beauté et l'horreur. Merci

Incredible how such a young man with a voice many denied was singing could keep on keeping on. He made our private world's public yet succeeded in keeping his private world away from the public. He possessed a wisdom and an ability to understand what was around him that ppl of seventy at the time could not see. I'm tipsy now on v v v cheap but ok cider so hope am making some sorta sense. I've loved him since I was sweet sixteen
