Independence Day
¿Àò¡¤°²µÂÎéµÂCarrie Underwood Lyrics

Well she seemed alright by dawn's early light
Though she looked a little worried and weak
She tried to pretend he wasn't drinkin' again
But daddy left the proof on her cheek
And I was only eight years old that summer
And I always seemed to be in the way
So I took myself down to the fair in town
On Independence Day

Well word gets around in a small, small town
They said he was a dangerous man
But mama was proud and she stood her ground
She knew she was on the losin' end
Some folks whispered, some folks talked
But everybody looked the other way
And when time ran out, there was no one about
On Independence Day

Let freedom ring
Let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know
That today is a day of reckoning
Let the weak be strong
Let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay
On Independence Day

Well she lit up the sky the fourth of July
By the time that the firemen came
They just put out the flames and took down some names
And sent me to the county home
Now I ain't sayin' it's right or it's wrong
But maybe it's the only way
Talk about your revolution
It's Independence Day

Let freedom ring
Let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know
That today is a day of reckoning
Let the weak be strong
Let the right be wrong

Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay
On Independence Day

Overall Meaning

The song "Independence Day" by Carrie Underwood is a powerful and emotional ballad that tells the story of a young girl who witnesses her father abusing her mother. The girl is only eight years old at the time but is acutely aware of the tension and danger in her family. Despite her mother's attempts to hide the abuse, the evidence is plainly visible on her mother's face. Feeling helpless and alone, the young girl runs away to the local fair on Independence Day, seeking refuge in the carnival atmosphere and the celebrations of freedom.

As the story unfolds, we learn that the woman is trapped in an abusive relationship with a dangerous man, but she refuses to give up hope. She stands her ground and fights for her own independence, even as the town looks the other way and ignores her plight. When the climax of the story comes, the woman takes a bold and dangerous action, lighting a fire that engulfs her home and symbolically sets her free. Though she pays a heavy price for her act of rebellion, the woman emerges as a hero, a symbol of the strength and resilience of those who fight for their own freedom.

The song captures the complex emotions of this difficult situation, with powerful lyrics that convey both the horror of abuse and the hope for a better future. Through the eyes of the young girl, we see the impact of violence on families and communities, but we also witness the power of solidarity and resistance. Ultimately, the song is a call to action, urging us to stand up for justice and freedom, no matter the cost.

I love this song. Even though it brings horrible flashbacks from my childhood back 15 years ago. Remembering the night when I awoke to my mom covered in blood and cuts telling us to wake up and put on our coats, she dragged me and my sister out of bed, and threw us in the car while she grabbed suitcases with clothes falling out of them, putting them into the trunk of our car, my sister was crying so I comforted her, while I was very confused. Then, my dad runs outside and grabs my mom by her neck trying to hurt her. I didn't know what to do, so I started honking the horn while I was crying my mom was okay, thank god a neighbor heard me and came outside, he was a close friend next door to us, so he came outside with his gun, and pointed it at my dad, as my neighbor was telling my mom and us to leave, she got into the car and sped away. I'll never get the sound of those tires squealing out of my head. Me and my mom drove from Michigan to Kentucky so we could stay with my grandparents. I've never seen my mom happier in my live, I now have 2 children, and she makes sure my husband is the best to me. And I have to say, he is wonderful. I'm blessed to have a normal, and loving family.

No one should put up with abuse, even though my dad never hurt me, nor my sister. If someone is being abused, get help, or help someone. It's not worth it..

plant You are a hero. You saved your mother's life, not only that night when you honked the car horn to bring help, but also in the years after. As a formerly abused wife, it was my love for my kids that kept me going when I was scared, tired (worked 4 part-time jobs and studied in my "spare" time), discouraged, sad, etc. And I know it gives your mother immense happiness to see you with a good man now. I wish I could hug you right now. I am so proud of you! Stay strong and beautiful, and keep telling your story so other women who are abused can have hope and courage for themselves and their children's sake.
