Part II
И. С. Бах — Страсти по Матфею Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna go back now

The seasons may come and your luck may just run out
And all that you'll have is a memory, oh

The seasons may come and your luck may just run out
And all that you'll have is a memory, oh

The seasons may come and your luck may just run out
And all that you'll have is a memory, oh

The seasons may come and your luck may just run out
And all that you'll have is a memory, oh

Used to get real high
Now I'm just gettin' a buzz

Used to get real high
Now I'm just gettin' a buzz

Used to get real high
Now I'm just gettin' a buzz

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of И. С. Бах — Страсти по Матфею's song Part II can be interpreted in a variety of ways, but one possible interpretation is that it speaks to the fleeting nature of life and regret over missed opportunities. The repeated refrain of "I just wanna go back now" suggests a longing to return to a time when things were simpler and easier, perhaps before the singer made mistakes or missed chances. The reference to seasons changing and luck running out implies that time is slipping away and that the singer feels powerless to stop it. The line "all that you'll have is a memory" reinforces this idea that life is fleeting and that what we do with our time matters.

The second stanza introduces a contrast between past and present, with the singer reflecting on how their experience of getting high has changed over time. The repetition of "used to get real high / now I'm just gettin' a buzz" suggests a sense of nostalgia for a time when the singer was able to experience things more intensely, even if those experiences were not always positive. This contrast may be meant to highlight the singer's sense of loss and regret, as they look back on their life and realize that they can never truly return to the past.

Si mes plaintes et mes larmes
sont impuissantes,
ah ! prenez donc mon coeur !
Qu'il devienne le calice
dans lequel s'épanchera

le doux sang de ses blessures.

I almost don’t believe one human could have written even just this, let alone the whole St. Matthew’s Passion, the Missa in B minor, the suites, violin sonatas (maybe the greatest thing ever written until Erwartung)... I think I could spend my life just listening to Bach’s choral work and never be want of anything else.

Well said!

J.S. Bach must have had the most attuned mind to receive such music and be able to translate it perfectly legibly for us all. Thank God he did, we need this Music now as never before.

I also don’t believe it’s possible. God’s gift to Germany to share with the world. Inspired!

You are so right. To this list I would like to add the St. John's Passion (BWV 245). I wish everyone a very Happy Easter (beatus Paschae) and peace to the world.

This is the best performance of this aria I've ever heard. Alex Potter is great singer. Very emotional.

It takes an exceptionally gifted human being to write something this beautiful. It also takes an exceptionally talented singer to sing it the way it was meant to be sung. What a glorious combination of talents!!! We are truly privileged to be able to enjoy this.

One of Bach's most sublime arias. I cannot hear this without starting to tear up.
