The band was formed when lead singer Aleksandr Vasilev, while working in at a theatrical institute, was introduced to keyboardist Nikolai Rostovskiy. The two formed a band, and risking Vasilev's job, began recording their first album in one of the institute's studios at night.
Despite the unstoppable rumours about the break-up situation of the group, Vasilev and Co. continue performing on different Russian and World stages. The members of the band have changed over time, but the Saint-Petersburg rock-band spirit has never left.
In recent months, the band has garnered international attention for the inclusion of their song "Be my Shadow" (Будь моей тенью) in Sergey Lukyanenko's bestselling novel, Night Watch, probably due to the mass popularity of the film of the same name.
In 2007, the group released their 9th studio album, Раздвоение Личности (Split Personality).

The song "Пластмассовая Жизнь" by Сплин (Splean) talks about the plasticity and phoniness of modern life. The lyrics start with the singer requesting someone to kill him as the lights go out suddenly. The ballerina nervously smokes cigarettes from a package, showing that the anxiety and tension in the air are palpable. Despite the sunlight shining outside, the snow from last year is still present, portraying a stale and fearful environment.
The lyrics liken everything in the world to plastic, explaining that one can sense "plastic life" all around. The second verse seems to convey a sense of ill-fatedness, as if humanity is on a path of destruction already calculated and arranged. The singer expresses that only the dead are not afraid of death. "...Вдоль дорог расставлены посты" ("Posts are set along the roads"), is a powerful phrase implying that our lives are constrained, with no chance of escaping.
The chorus repeats the idea of all life being plastic and the tails dragging as if scattered or thrown away. The final lines are again a request for someone to kill the singer for having become too cold to the person. Альбом "25-ый кадр" был (без шуток) последним гениальным шедевром группы, а выпускаемое после этого их творчество, к сожалению, мне совсем не нравится, кроме нескольких отдельных песен. Но про Гарри Поттера хорошая песня!
