Fasateen
Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

In "Fasateen," مشروع ليلى tells a story of a past relationship where the singer recalls moments of vulnerability and promises that were made by their partner. The first verse reminisces in particular an instance where the partner assures the singer that they will marry them even though they are broke and homeless. The singer then asks their partner if she remembers how much she loved them, regardless of him not sharing the same religion as hers. The verse ends with the singer asking his partner if she remembers how they used to be.

The second verse starts off with a moment of intimacy where the partner brushes the singer's hair and promises him a revolution. The lyrics then shift to an abrupt end where the partner forgets about their promises and sells the singer off. The verse ends as the singer questions her partner on the forgotten promises made in the earlier verse.

As a whole, "Fasateen" is a commentary on broken promises and romantic vulnerability. The juxtaposition between the moments of tenderness and the ultimate abandonment conveys a sense of betrayal and heartbreak that the singer felt in the relationship.

English translation :
Do you remember when you told me that you'd love me (the way I am) without money or a house?
Do you remember that you used to love me even though I'm not from your religion?
Do you remember how it used to be like that?
Do you remember when your mom caught me sleeping in your bed, and she told me to forget you
And we agreed to continue this way without playing any roles or showing off, without any neckties or morning visits (from the ladies) (here we have some cultural things طنطنات is like putting on airs and صبحيات is when the ladies come over to visit and gossip in the morning over coffee. in short, they agree not to do any of the traditional stuff typical of marriage in middle class Lebanese society)

Without any millions
Without any dresses (I think wedding dresses here, i.e. not traditional)

You took my hand and promised me some revolution
How could you forget me?
You brushed my hair and sent me off to work
However you brushed, you brushed me the same

You took my hand and promised me some revolution
How could you forget me?

Do you remember when you told me that you intended to leave me with no money and no house
