The Kill
♫ 30 Seconds To Mars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What if I wanted to break
Laugh it all off in your face
What would you do?
What if I fell to the floor
Couldn't take all this anymore
What would you do, do, do?

Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you

What if I wanted to fight
Beg for the rest of my life
What would you do?
You say you wanted more
What are you waiting for?
I'm not running from you

Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you
Look in my eyes
You're killing me, killing me
All I wanted was you

I tried to be someone else
But nothing seemed to change
I know now, this is who I really am inside
I've finally found myself
Fighting for a chance
I know now, this is who I really am

Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you, you, you
Look in my eyes
You're killing me, killing me
All I wanted was you
Come, break me down
Break me down
Break me down

What if I wanted to break
What if I, what if I, what if I (bury me, bury me)

Overall Meaning

"The Kill" by 30 Seconds to Mars is a song that explores themes of control, power, and identity. The lead singer, Jared Leto, grapples with the idea of being controlled by someone else and the consequences of trying to break free. The lyrics, "What if I wanted to break, Laugh it all off in your face, What would you do?," showcase Leto's desire to rebel against someone's control and watch them react. However, when he falls to the floor and can't handle it anymore, he asks, "What would you do?" Here, the question is left unanswered, leaving listeners wondering who or what is controlling Leto and what his intention is.

Throughout the song, Leto repeats the phrase, "Come, break me down, Bury me, bury me, I am finished with you." The repetition of this phrase drives home the idea that his desire to break free from control comes at a cost, but he is willing to pay it. The bridge, which reads, "I tried to be someone else, But nothing seemed to change," shows that Leto tried to conform to someone's desires, but ultimately couldn't. The song ends with him screaming, "What if I wanted to break," amplifying the desperation of his situation and ending the song on a haunting note.

I think that song and the video revolves around the search for who they are and their purpose in life, as well as the challenges they encountered along the way. All of them are in search of who they are and their life purpose. Along the way they receive messages that life send to them, and face several obstacles, which are their deepest fears. The relationships are shown as sadomasochistic, implying that the pleasure and  the  pain they provide, turn into ties that arrest us, thus becoming the biggest obstacles to our search for ourselves and our purpose ...
One aspect that is in the lyrics of the song, but is  also shown in the videoclip is that sometimes you have to abandon a dream to follow another one,  and that life is about choices. When we choose something,  sometimes we have to give up another.
In my opinion, the lyrics is a monologue about mixed feelings about a choice that he made in life when he had to leave the love of his life behind to meet his purpose in life (which here is metaphorically exemplified as God.)

When he sings:
"The promises we made Were not enough
The prayers That We had prayed Were like a drug
The Secrets That We Were sold never known
The love we had, the love we had, we had to let it go, oh"

he meet three blond children, drawing symbols on the floor. Once they see him, they get up and run away. Immediately, many symbols of the band are tattooed on his body. In my opinion, this scene symbolizes the resignation of a dream to achieve  another dream. The children who run away, symbolize the lost dream of having a family with the woman he loved. This dream was replaced by other dream - 30 seconds to mars.
This is quite a dramatic love story, but this is how i perceive it. Do you agree with me?

No matter how many times that you told me you wanted to leave
No matter how many breaths that you took, you still couldn't breathe
No matter how many nights that you lie wide awake to the sound of poison rain
Where did you go? Where did you go? Where did you go?
As days go by, the night's on fire
Tell me would you kill to save a life?
Tell me would you kill to prove you're right?
Crash, crash, burn, let it all burn
This hurricane's chasing us all underground
No matter how many deaths that I die I will never forget
No matter how many lives that I live, I will never regret
There is a fire inside of this heart
And a riot about to explode into flames
Where is your God? Where is your God? Where is your God?
Ooooooo-ooohhh Ooooooo-ooohhh
Do you really want...
Do you really want me?
Do you really want me dead,
Or alive to torture for my sins?
Do you really want...
Do you really want me?
Do you really want me dead,
Or alive to live a lie?
Tell me would you kill to save a life?
Tell me would you kill to prove you're right?
Crash, crash, burn, let it all burn
This hurricane's chasing us all underground
The promises we made were not enough (Never play the game again)
The prayers that we have prayed were like a drug (Never gonna hit the air)
The secrets that we sold were never known (Never sing a song for you)
The love we had, the love we had, we had to let it go.
(Never giving in again, Never giving in again)
Tell me would you kill to save a life?
Tell me would you kill to prove you're right?
Crash, crash, burn, let it all burn
This hurricane's chasing us all underground
Whoa, This hurricane [x3]
Whoa
Do you really want...
Do you really want me?
Do you really want me dead,
Or alive to torture for my sins?
Do you really want...
Do you really want me?
Do you really want me dead,
Or alive to live a lie?
