Mr Brightside
♫ The Killers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go
And I just can't look, it's killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside
I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go
'Cause I just can't look, it's killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibi
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside
I never
I never
I never
I never
The song "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers tells the story of a man who is struggling with jealousy and heartbreak after seeing his love interest with someone else. The song starts with the man coming out of his cage (possibly metaphorical) and saying he's been doing just fine. However, he feels sick in his stomach and can't stop thinking about the woman touching another man's chest and taking off her dress. He can't look but he feels like he's losing control. He tries to tell himself that it was only a kiss, but the jealousy is turning him into someone he doesn't want to be. The chorus says that destiny is calling him to open up his eager eyes and be Mr. Brightside, possibly meaning that he needs to let go of his jealousy and move on to something better.
The second verse is similar to the first, with the man saying he's been doing just fine, but then sees the woman with another man again. This time, he tries to let go of his jealousy and says "let me go." However, the jealousy is still taking control of him. The chorus repeats again, with the man trying to embrace his destiny and be "Mr. Brightside." The song ends with the words "I never" repeated four times, possibly indicating that the man never wants to feel this way again.

Lyrics:
You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now, here he comes
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentlemen
Like you imagined when you were young
Can we climb this mountain?
I don't know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let's take it easy
Easy now, watch it go
We're burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young
And sometimes you close your eyes
And see the place where you used to live
When you were young
They say the devil's water, it ain't so sweet
You don't have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while
You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now, here he comes
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentlemen
Like you imagined when you were young
(Talks like a gentlemen, like you imagined)
When you were young
I said he doesn't look a thing like Jesus
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But more than you'll ever know

My boyfriend who passed away a few weeks ago sang this song when we were at a bar doing karaoke one night. Since he sang it that night, I had been trying to figure out the name of it; I finally came across it tonight. The song has so much meaning to me. We were together for five years and were both young when he sung this song. Now I just watch the video of him in my phone when he sang this song that night at the bar, wishing he was still alive, wishing that we could go back in time to when we were young. R.I.P. Chris, I'll always love you.

You truly don’t appreciate the intensity of this song until you’ve come back to it a decade later, having lived some life and experienced some heartbreak.
