A-mei is an ethnic Puyuma. Like most Chinese aborigines she was exposed to tribal music during her childhood. A-mei's mother used to record herself singing and then play back the tape for her daughters to hear. A-mei had always been fascinated by music; she once said she stuck to the radio and would rush to watch the late night music program introducing English songs when she was a little girl. She also showed great eagerness to perform in public, forcing her friends to listen to her sing.
A-mei first connected to the entertainment business by joining the televised "Five Lights Singing Contest" by TTV in 1994, after encouragment by her father, who was ill at that time. A-mei made all her way through to the finals but eventually lost in the final round. She felt very disappointed and most likely to quit her interest in music competition. A-mei's father then told her "you definitely can sing and perform songs beautifully, why don't you join the competition again to show that you got a talent in music?" So A-mei was encouraged and then decided to make a second attempt in the following year. This time her stable and superb performances were much appreciated by the judges, and A-mei was awarded the champion. Unfortunately, Amei's father passed away before her victory, making A-mei sad and aimless until she began to sing in pubs with a rock band formed by her musician cousin. She was later discovered by the popular singer/producer Chang Yu-Sheng (張雨生) and started her career.

The lyrics to "Disappear" by 張惠妹 (A-mei) describe the aftermath of a broken relationship. The imagery of a rose blooming in the middle of the night symbolizes the beauty of the relationship that suddenly ended. The lost petals represent the things they shared that are now gone, and going back to the scene of where it all fell apart is no use, as there is no one left to hear the waiting echoes.
The second stanza talks about how memories linger on, especially during winter time when the winds are weak and the kite string cannot be returned to its former state. There is no point in flying a kite in a sky that doesn't exist, and the singer can't help but think about the pain of the past. The once joyful expressions are lost and only black laughter and snow white tears remain, while the long frozen river seems to flow unrelenting.
The final stanza speaks of the things that have been lost forever. The story has gone astray and the hero's lines have been forgotten. The happy memories have disappeared and the white dove with broken wings has lost even its excuses for not being able to fly. The song that they once shared and the laughter they once had are only memories that continue to haunt the singer.

沒有經歷過阿妹時期的小朋友可能不瞭解,年輕時去ktv整層包廂大約20、30間,（那時候廁所大多在外面）出去共用廁所沿路真的不誇張是每一間包廂都在唱張惠妹的歌，是每一間！那個盛況空前，真的前無古人後無來者！我再也沒有看到能夠這樣的歌手了！
