Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of 北からの手紙 (Kitakara no Tegami or Letter from the North) by 渚ゆう子 (Yuko Nagisa) describe the writer's feelings of loneliness and longing for someone who is not physically present. The first stanza talks about the writer's attempts to write a letter to this person while surrounded by the scent of lilies, a flower whose meaning is later explained in the song. Despite being by this person's side, the writer cannot find answers to their questions and chooses to leave, crossing the sea to come here alone. This second line is metaphorical, as the writer may be physically present but emotionally missing from the relationship. The last line in this stanza mentions the act of standing their collar up, possibly to try and shield themselves from the cold that comes with the loneliness they are feeling.

The second stanza goes on to describe the meaning of the lilies and how the writer fears that their presence might shatter the dreams of the person they long for. They mention having come to a lake where a type of algae called "Marimo" can be found growing, and how their feelings burn with the same intensity as the glowing algae. However, the loneliness they have been grappling with is causing them pain, which is something they cannot seem to escape from.

The final stanza talks about the writer's wondering if the person they long for is crying for them too, and the writer's own confusion about where they should go from here. The song ends with the image of the writer's loneliness crossing the skies of the North.
