Neon
约翰梅尔John Mayer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When sky blue gets dark enough
To see the colors of the city lights
A trail of ruby red and diamond white
Hits her like a sunrise

She comes and goes and comes and goes
Like no one can
Tonight she's out to lose herself
And find a high on Peachtree Street
From mixed drinks to techno beats it's always
Heavy into everything

She comes and goes and comes and goes
Like no one can
She comes and goes and no one knows
She's slipping through my hands

She's always buzzing just like
Neon, neon
Neon, neon
Who knows how long, how long, how long
She can go before she burns away

I can't be her angel now
You know it's not my place to hold her down
And it's hard for me to take a stand
When I would take her anyway I can

She comes and goes and comes and goes
Like no one can
She comes and goes and no one knows
She's slipping through my hands

She's always buzzing just like
Neon, neon
Neon, neon

Who knows how long, how long, how long
She can go before she burns away

Overall Meaning

The song "Neon" by John Mayer describes a mysterious, elusive woman who comes and goes like no one else can. When the sky turns from blue to dark, the city lights reveal a trail of ruby red and diamond white, which hit the woman like a sunrise. She seeks to lose herself in the bright lights of Peachtree Street, indulging in mixed drinks and techno beats. The woman is always buzzing like neon, and no one knows how long she can go before she burns away.

The song tells the story of a man who finds it difficult to hold onto this woman, as she slips through his hands like elusive neon lights. He cannot be her angel nor hold her down, and even though he knows it is not his place to take a stand, he would take her any way he can. The song could be interpreted to mean that the woman is struggling with addiction or the party lifestyle, and the man cannot save her. Alternatively, the song could also be interpreted as the man trying to come to terms with the fact that the woman is not his to hold onto.

I write guitar songs and I don't particularly like this song. It's overly complicated and far too busy. It's like he is trying to make it complicated on purpose, instead of adding beauty or meaning to the song. It's like someone writing lyrics to the pentatonic scale.

Contrast it with a classical guitarist playing Claire de Lune skillfully on the guitar and you will see what I mean. Both songs are wickedly difficult, but for Claire de Lune, there is a reason for the complexity, not just busy noise like neon.
