In January 2016, Nayoung, Sejeong and Mina were introduced as Jellyfish Entertainment's first female trainees on the Mnet survival show Produce 101 where 101 female trainees from various companies competed to debut in an 11-member girl group that would promote for a year under YMC Entertainment. After placing, respectively, 2nd and 9th in the final episode, Sejeong and Mina eventually debuted as members of I.O.I in May 2016.
Despite denying earlier reports about Sejeong and Mina debuting in a 7-member girl group in June, the company confirmed on June 7 that the two I.O.I members would debut within the month in what would be the company's first girl group. Because of YMC Entertainment's special terms in which I.O.I's members are allowed to do activities under their respective companies while IOI was on break or while the group promoted in sub-units, there were no complications with the plan.
Nayoung was also confirmed as a member on June 10 and on June 13, the company revealed that gugudan would be a 9-member group. On June 17, Jellyfish Entertainment announced the group name. On June 22, the group confirmed that they were going for a "mermaid" concept. On June 24, an highlight medley of the group's debut mini-album was released.
On January 20 2017, it was reported that gugudan was set for a February comeback. On February 3, Jellyfish Entertainment announced that gugudan would make their first comeback since debut with their second mini-album, on February 28. On February 24, Jellyfish Entertainment announced that the release of the album was changed to February 27. Gugudan released their second mini-album Act.2 Narcissus and its title track 나 같은 애 (A Girl Like Me), on February 27, 2017.
Gugudan's first sub-unit, 구구단 오구오구 (gugudan OGUOGU, gugudan 5959) made its debut on August 10, 2017. Composed of the group's two youngest members, Mina and Hyeyeon, the sub-unit promoted the single Ice Chu.
On November 8, 2017, gugudan had a comeback with their first single album, Act.3 Chococo and its title track Chococo. This was a comeback without Soyee, who temporarily halted activities due to a shoulder injury. Soyee returned to the group for their Feburary 1, 2018 comeback Act.4 Cait Sith, promoting the title track The Boots. This would prove to be their final comeback as a nine-member group, with maknae Hyeyeon announcing her departure on October 25th.
Gugudan's second sub-unit, 구구단 세미나 (gugudan SEMINA), debuted on July 10, 2018. This sub-unit consists of members Sejeong, Mina and Nayoung. This sub-unit aims to showcase a retro image, similar to the trio's first performance on Produce 101. Gugudan SEMINA debuted with the single album SEMINA, promoting the title track 샘이나.
On November 6th 2018, gugudan released their fourth mini album, Act.5 New Action, promoting the title track Not That Type. This marks the group's first comeback without Hyeyeon. Among the mini album's six tracks is 너에게 (Dear), written solely by member Sejeong.
gugudan has been inactive as a group since then with a lot of speculations about whether or not the group would've disbanded without an official statement. Meanwhile, Chinese member Sally participated in the Chinese version of survival show Produce 101, Produce Camp 2020, in April. The survival show concluded with Sally ranking 6th, making her a member of the temporary girl group 硬糖少女303.
On 30th December 2020, it was announced that the group would be disbanding on the 31st after over 2 years of inactivity.

The name gugudan is a wordplay. It comes from the Korean word "geuk-dan" which means theatrical performance. In other words, this girl group debuted with the concept that they're going to take stories, movies and plays and portray them in their own way through their songs (which is why they did the little mermaid concept). Each album is going to be based on a famous work of literature or art, and it's going to carry a lot of hidden meanings. For this debut song, Gugudan is portraying how much they dreamed about performing on stage instead of just dreaming about it behind the scenes- just like the little mermaid wanted to become a human and live above water. That's why the ending is them picking up a shell and bowing to a crowd- it symbolizes them fulfilling their dreams and debuting! Jellyfish has put a lot of thought into this group and I think they're really unique... it's a concept that's never been seen before.
