The Ending
(We Are) Performance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This won't mean a thing,
You won't even hear.
I made a horrible plan,
I make such horrible plans.

I'll watch you leave then I'll follow.
I have no faith in tomorrow.
And time, time was spent,
Time was borrowed.

Yeah, there must be smarter ways,
I just want greater days,
This guilt is freezing.
Sure, I've severed tighter ties,
With even whiter lies.
You spoke of future, it's cute but it's foolish.

I'll watch you leave then I'll follow.
And I have no faith in tomorrow.
And time, time was spent,
Time was borrowed.

This is the ending.
This is regret.
We were pretending, chasing silhouettes.

Yeah, we spoke of happy days,
But it's a ghastly age,
I'm looking older.
Sure, we always spoke of dreams,
But they were simply schemes,
If you think back you'll find loss I promise.

I'll watch you leave then I'll follow.
And I have no faith in tomorrow.

This won't mean a thing,
You won't even hear.
I made a horrible plan.
We are all guilty of planning the ending.

This is the ending.
This is regret.
We were pretending, chasing silhouettes. (x2)

We are falling, we are falling out, we are falling out.

We are falling out to the end. (x4)

--First. Clear skys.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of (We Are) Performance's song "The Ending" depict the singer's acknowledgement of their own failures, regrets and guilt over a failed relationship. The singer begins by admitting that their attempts to plan their future with their partner have been a complete failure and that their partner is likely not even listening to them anymore. They express their regret over these mistakes, not being able to see a better way out of their situation, and the time they wasted trying to make things work.

The next verses reflect on the challenges in the relationship, how they tried to sever ties, and how dreams became just schemes. The singer also acknowledges their own age and loss of innocence during the relationship, highlighting just how much they failed in their attempts to stay together. The chorus comes back in, with the singer admitting that this is the end, and that the relationship was founded on pretend, with both parties chasing shadows that were never there.

Overall, the song is a reminder of the inherent flaws in relationships and human nature in general.

Your acoustic versions are always killer! You should make a compilation album with acoustic versions throughout your career!

Jose Fuentes

There is an acoustic album called Naked and Fearless, it was released in 2009. I'm agree they should consider release a second one.

Matthew Russell

@Jose Fuentes that's more of an EP. It only has three songs on it.

Morgan Bunkley

Naked and fearless only has a couple songs. They have done like 20 something versions of their original tracks

Anthony Prato

Agreed, I'd buy that album in a heartbeat.

KEFFLON THE MUFFLON

I was also thinking! That would be so great!

Better than life 😍

Jason Blessing

Everything. Literally all your songs. You kill it every time. I’d buy an acoustic compilation CD from y’all a million times over.

Rob Jessop

@Laney Can't believe nobody else liked this comment. 'Better Than Life' would be amazing as an acoustic performance.
