As for the rest:

As I said, you do not have to be perfectly centered on the magnetic pole, for the compass to simply spin. So once the compass starts spinning, one can claim to be at either Magnetic North, or Magnetic South. Magnetic poles give a bit more wiggle room than geometric poles.

And because of the imperfections of the Earth, one must give a margin of error, in which one could use to determine if that are "Exactly where they started." My wiggle room, was plus or minus 2%.

1% of a mile is 52.8 feet.

Going to Geometric North, you can claim to be exactly where you started if you end up 52.8 feet before, or after the pole.

Where Magnetic Pole, I don't know how much wiggle room you have in real life. However, if a compass were to start spinning 52.8 feet before reach dead center (therefore 52.8 feet radius). If being within that circle means being at the magnetic pole, then a 1% margin of error, means you would be 105.6 feet away from the center, but only 52.8 feet from the entirety of the pole itself.

That's quite a bit of wiggle room.

Which is why the answer I gave was "More likely to be Magnetic North."

I didn't say he was at the magnetic north, I simply said he was more likely, i.e. higher probability of it being magnetic North, than any other answer.

If you're working in the domain of aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering or astrophysics (which you would be if you were interviewing for SpaceX), the level of mathematical thinking this requires is actually quite basic and you should already already know all the prerequisite math for this question (which is undergraduate level). Given that it's Elon who's interviewing, he's obviously not going to test someone on something that's not his area of expertise.

It's still a good question because there are a lot of gotchas - someone who really tries to think through the problem completely will at least try to double check if they've cross verified every possible case. The "genius" bit seems like an exaggeration, but someone who's really smart should actually be able to reason through and derive the full solution.

As I walk the 1 mile around the circle and am returning to where I started [before the 1 mile north walk], at some point I am no longer walking "west" and therefore break the rules of the question. I can't be walking west all the time when I walk in a circle. The only answer therefore is the north pole. This idea of the circles doesn't work with what the question asks about walking west.

Following the instructions and everything works. Next consider any latitude circle near the south pole with 'circumference' 1/n km for any positive integer n. The same process works, just that you make many trips around the latitude circle, traveling west all the time. Thus there are (in theory) infinitely many solutions.

This is likely why the first time I heard this riddle, it added one line to the story after walking 1 mile west: "I shot a bear," and asked a different question: "What colour was the bear?" This eliminates all of the infinite number of circles around the south pole, as there are no bears there. Polar bears are Arctic animals. You must have started at the north pole, the bear was white.

I saw a video similar to this a while ago. It was to go in a straight line, turn 90° go in a straight line, turn 90°, go in a straight line and you are where you started because you are on a globe

That's because the Earth isn't a perfect sphere and when you consider uneven terrain even more discrepancies occur. Starting at the north pole would work IRL as long as you don't veer north or south on the west leg. Making sure of that is tricky, granted, as we have a tendency to walk in large circles and that does make it very difficult IRL. You'd be fine if you made it 100m in each direction, but I think a mile is enough to make those small inaccuracies count.

The south pole won't work because you can't travel south of it, only north. Also the riddle clearly states that you go a mile in each direction which makes the 2π solutions invalid. Whether it's a nautical mile, statute mile, international mile or survey mile makes no difference, as long as you use the same mile on the north and south legs of the journey.

A perfect sphere is a symmetry. So any property that you attribute to any one point should be applicable to all points. This is the first one I came even close to solving. My solution was the north pole, because that's the only place that seemed to fully satisfy all the requirements. I didn't think of the other solutions, because I confused entering a different hemisphere with going a different direction.

The question being asked 'Where am I?' rather than, 'Where could I be...?' .... Is there something to be said for introducing some kind of social logic, which requires that the answer is in fact the 'simple' 'North Pole' answer, because you simply can't know where the person is, only where they might be, based on the really interesting explanations made in this video. In other words, if I'm asking 'Where am I?' as a riddle or puzzle, and I want to allow that the person should be allowed to give/guess the precisely correct answer, then maybe the North Pole is the only fair answer. Otherwise ask 'Whwre could I be' sort of thing ... The maths is really interesting but I just wondered about looking at a 'reasonable' answer to the specific question posed ... I was going to say the same thing, you'd never be in the same place even standing still. It's not only the earth's rotation around the sun, which does repeat once every year (it, more or less being the definition of a year), but the sun's, (and that implies the solar system) rotation about the centre of the milky way (our galaxy) and our galaxy's movement within the universe, given that the universe is expanding. Looked at like that you're never in the same position, even if you stay still.

Consider the following graphic solution to the North Pole answer. Picture a 2D polar plot of the NP with cardinal points of the compass marked meridian lines. Any direction you go from the center is also South. So walking due West for one mile on this polar plot and back to the center means you traveled South, West and back North all on the same meridian.

There is another way you could do it.
After walking one mile south to point A, walk one mile west then take a train or whatever transport you fancy to come back to A and then travel one hour north.
If we replace travel with walk in the original problem then both these alternate solutions would become null and void.

My first suggestion was the north pole, then I was thinking about the possibilities to navigate your desired direction (S,W,N). There is no compass or gps working at the poles, so you need some kind of inertial reference system (pretty big expensive stuff) like in modern aircrafts. But you need to align this system below the poles so far away from your starting position (something like 70 degrees north max.) to make at work at the poles. Navigation by stars could be an option, but I don't know much about how the stars can show you the direction at the poles.

There are an infinite number of circles around the south pole of increasing circumference as the earth expands towards the equator, when considering the axis of the earth from the north pole to the south pole. At one exact distance it will be exactly 1 mile in circumference. You are one mile north of any point on that line or you are one mile north of an infinite number of other circles (including the 0 point of the pole itself) decreasing in circumference such that one mile is an exact number of laps around the circumference. For example, where the circumference is exactly ½ a mile, walking west one mile will be two laps and end back where you started, a ⅛th mile circumference will be 8 laps before ending back at the same spot, but a circumference of ¾ mile will end up ¼ if a mile away before moving back north again.

So you are at any of an infinite number of points (that, despite being infinite, does not cover all points) between 1 mile north of the south pole, and one mile north of the point at which the circumference is exactly 1 mile.

When I came across this the first time in an OLD Scientific American, they gave these two sets of answers. But there are other sets of answers that depend upon HOW one navigates & the geography of the landscape.

For example if one ONLY takes a single directional sighting before heading off in a direction there are another infinite set of answer rings where you cross the south pole on the first leg & then circle around the pole N time. To me, it really depends on if it is true North or Magnetic North. Depending on which you use, it will either change over time or remain exactly the same. Also not sure if it applies, relevant to the terrain, but a nautical mile is slightly longer than a normal mile.

I'm confused why the answer isn't literally anywhere on the sphere? The way I'm thinking about it is you can rotate the sphere any direction and choose the northern most spot. Then rotate it back to how it was oriented originally.

Exactly at the north pole, and (theoretically) in an endless amount of other spots 1 mile north from a specific latitude, that is 1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, ... mile long. From there you go 1 mile south, then you make 1, 2, 3, 4, ... loops on the same latitude and go the same way north, on which you came from initially.

You could be anywhere on the 'perfect sphere' Earth.
Since it is a 'perfect sphere' , any other points along the equator or the longitudinal lines from N-S poles would work on the same principles as being a 'north' or 'south' pole.

I think this only works if you watch your compass constantly on the westbound leg of the journey and adjust accordingly. You will need to do this to remain at the same latitude. If, however, you've walked 1 mile south, turn to the west and see a large tree in the distance due west (forget we're in a part of the world very devoid of trees!) and start walking directly towards the tree, you will find you are crossing lines of latitude towards the south. Granted, you are no longer walking to the west but increasingly south of west. Once you walk north again you won't end up where you started.

Correct. The speed at which you are traveling as well as the speed of the revolution of the earth itself has to be taken into consideration to answer. In addition there are other variables that are unknown that would need to be clarified or provided to answer the question correctly.

You forgot one, or several. Since the puzzle is using compass headings, possibilities should also include Magnetic North (true north). That is a single point that is constantly moving, or changing from one point to another? So in that case the North Pole option would actually be the Magnetic North pole option.

Can the answer be any point 1 mile from the South Pole?
Because if we move 1 mile south we are at the South Pole and now we can't move west because if we do so we are going towards the north direction. So we are still at the South Pole and now moving towards 1 mile will get you at the same point.

This answer seems way more complex than it needs to be. The North Pole is a single point on a sphere with a surface made of infinite points. The first solution contains all other solutions. Just shift the origin to any other (non-used) point, rinse and repeat. The latter described sets are literally sub-sets of the first solution. This is just a description of non-euclidean geometry. The triangle described at The North Pole can be shifted anywhere (not previously designated) to describe every point on the surface of the sphere. The surface area of the sphere can be described finitely and infinitely without contradiction in mathematics.

Oh and to clarify why it is only 1 of those two locations, and not the infinite possibilities he mentioned: He specifically said "I am on Earth" at the beginning of the Riddle, and those infinite possibilities are only capable on a theoretical standpoint of a "perfect sphere." Earth is not a perfect sphere, therefore invalidating every infinite spot he has mentioned.

The reason I listed Geometric North, and Magnetic North separately is because the two are not 1 in the same. The compasses we use points to magnetic north, while the axis of rotation is around geometric north.

ALSO since Earth isn't a perfect sphere, there is no guarantee that you will end up exactly where you started. You might be "close enough" a 1% margin of error. Pushing the "Close enough" excuse a 2% margin of error. Or no where near, a 3%+ margin of error.

Since Magnetic North covers a larger area of the Earth, than geometric north (though relatively not all that much bigger) and you do not have to be perfectly at the center of magnetic north for the compass needle to spin rapidly, The person is far more likely to be at "Magnetic North," instead of Geometric north.

Death's Heir If you introduce the non-perfect sphere argument, then there is no place that would be a correct answer, so I don't understand your argument. In that case, North pole (magnetic or geographic) is just as wrong answer as any of the infinite answers in the South.

That is only one single case (or two cases if you count magnetic and geographic poles as two answers) compared to an infinite number of cases (or twice that many) of the South pole answer.
Sphere is not unique with the 3 90° angles = triangle. Oblate ellipsoids also have this property.

I say the North pole answer works, but if you use the south pole theory where you draw a circle one mile away from the south pole, and start one mile north of that circle, once you have traveled west, using the North pole as a straight line trajectory, it wouldn't fall on the exact same spot, but given the scale of the earth it would be really close, thoughts anyone?

My second solution after north pole was clear, was any point 1mile north of the south pole. So if you go 1mile south your at the south pole and can't go west and then go the the same mile back north your at the same spot.
First I thought you forgot this solution but than I realised that if n goes to inf the south pole might actually be included in this solution. So to summarise either you rotate inf times at the south pole or just do nothing and go back to your startingpoint

One mile south and north cancel each other out, the interesting part is the mile west.
The earth rotate from west to east, so if I move equally fast to the west as the world rotates to east, I'll still be in the same spot from an outside looking perspective, just everything around me has moved.

I don't understand how that works. If you go any further north that 1 mile circumference will grow longer so when you go to make your northern trip it won't quite make it far enough.

The answer is, of course, white, a polar bear.
