22Gz began gaining a following back in 2016 after he released the singles “Blixky” and “Suburban”. The latter, which was produced by London based drill/UK grime producer AXL Beats, is regarded as one of the first major Brookyln drill songs to become popular.

He was later signed to Kodak Black’s Florida based label, Sniper Gang, in 2018.

His first major mixtape, The Blixky Tape, was released through Atlantic Records in the summer of 2019.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to 22Gz's song Retaliation are about gang violence and revenge. The first verse talks about a sniper trying to kill someone who they believe is still alive after previous attempts. The rapper talks about the tinted windows of their vehicle and using a FN gun that can go through the victim's face to the other side. He states that he has "spinned [the victim's] block about a hundred times" and that he has "spent cases" which implies that he has already done some damage to the victim's associates. He plans to do a hit wearing McQueens shoes to hide their faces and intends to use a revolver that will catch all the cases. The last line of the verse "catch him and fry him like bacon" is a gruesome reference to violence.

The second verse continues the violent themes of the song. He wants to turn the victim into a patient as soon as they locate him and refers to killing him as "leaving him wasted". The rapper talks about how the victim shouldn't have been dropping "rakes" (a gang signal) and will end up with a mortgage for all his fraud.
