4KUBA Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And trouble begins to brew,
Whenever the Winter winds become too strong,
I concentrate on you.
When fortune cries "Nay! Nay!" to me
And people declare "You're through!",
Whenever the blues become my only song,I concentrate on you.
On your smile so sweet, so tender,
When at first your kiss I decline.
On the light in your eyes when I surrender,
And once again our arms intertwine
And so, when wise men say to me
That love's young dream never comes true,
To prove that even wise men can be wrong,
I concentrate on you.
The lyrics of 4KUBA's song "Concentrate" delve into the theme of love as a powerful force that can illuminate even the darkest moments of life. The imagery in the opening stanza paints a vivid picture of adversity, where the singer is faced with bleak weather and troubling times. The "gray skies" and "Winter winds" serve as metaphors for emotional turmoil and hardship. In this context, the act of concentrating on a loved one becomes a refuge—a coping mechanism that allows the individual to transcend their troubles. Love, in this narrative, is portrayed as a source of strength that helps the singer endure life's inevitable challenges. It suggests that even when external circumstances become overwhelming, the internal sanctuary of love offers solace and hope.
As the song progresses, the singer confronts feelings of despair and societal rejection. The phrases "fortune cries 'Nay! Nay!'" and "people declare 'You're through!'" indicate moments of significant disappointment and discouragement. Here, the "blues" symbolize not just sadness, but also a feeling of isolation when facing life's challenges. The juxtaposition of external negativity with the internal choice to focus on love highlights a deliberate act of will—the singer chooses to center their thoughts on their significant other to counteract adversity. This choice reveals the transformative power of love, emphasizing that relationships can provide a mental and emotional anchor amid chaos. By turning their attention to their partner, they reject the discouraging external voices and instead embrace a more optimistic perspective.
The third stanza introduces a more intimate exploration of love, showcasing its nuances through tender moments between the singer and their beloved. Descriptions of the partner's “sweet, tender” smile and the initial reluctance to embrace love (“when at first your kiss I decline”) depict the complexities of romantic relationships—highlighting both vulnerability and surrender. This tension is universal; it resonates with anyone who has hesitated at the threshold of emotional intimacy. The imagery of intertwining arms symbolizes a bridging of space and barriers, suggesting that love can lead to reconciliation and unity even after moments of doubt. The act of surrender indicates a transformation where the singer allows love to take over, illustrating that true connection fosters healing and closeness.
In the final stanza, there is a reflection on the conventional wisdom surrounding love: the idea that youthful dreams are often unrealistic and fleeting. When the "wise men" assert that such dreams "never come true," the singer's resolve to focus on their partner serves as a counterpoint to this cynicism. By choosing to concentrate on love despite the skepticism of others, the singer affirms the validity and power of their own emotional experience. This line critiques societal norms that suggest that love is futile, emphasizing that true passion can defy the odds. Through persistent concentration on love, the singer seeks to illustrate the beauty of a committed relationship that challenges the naysayers, ultimately proving that personal truths can triumph over general wisdom. This culmination brings together the themes of resilience, intimacy, defiance, and the transformative power of love, leaving listeners with a feeling of hope and affirmation.

Whenever skies look gray to me
In moments when my mood is overshadowed by sadness or uncertainty,
And trouble begins to brew,
And challenges start to surface in my life,
Whenever the Winter winds become too strong,
When harsh realities and difficulties feel overwhelming,
I concentrate on you.
I focus my thoughts and emotions on you, seeking comfort and solace through your presence.
When fortune cries 'Nay! Nay!' to me
In times when luck and fate seem to conspire against me,
And people declare 'You're through!',
And others doubt my abilities or declare my efforts as futile,
Whenever the blues become my only song,
During periods when melancholy is all I can resonate with,
I concentrate on you.
I redirect my focus and energy towards you, finding hope and inspiration in your spirit.
On your smile so sweet, so tender,
I cherish the warmth and kindness you express through your joyful smile,
When at first your kiss I decline.
Even when I initially hesitate to embrace deep affection or intimacy,
On the light in your eyes when I surrender,
I am captivated by the warmth and reassurance reflected in your eyes once I allow myself to be vulnerable,
And once again our arms intertwine
As we come together, embracing one another, reinforcing our connection and bond.
And so, when wise men say to me
Thus, when knowledgeable and experienced individuals attempt to impart their views about love, suggesting its futility,
That love's young dream never comes true,
That they claim the idealistic visions of love held in youth are nothing more than illusions destined to fail,
To prove that even wise men can be wrong,
I seek to demonstrate that their wisdom can be flawed, and love can indeed be real and attainable,
I concentrate on you.
Therefore, I continue to focus on you, whose love and reality affirm my beliefs against the cynicism surrounding love's possibilities.
