Jackson was born and raised in South Jamaica, a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. His mother Sabrina, a drug dealer, died in a fire when he was 8. Since his father had already abandoned the family, young Curtis was sent to live with his grandparents. Growing up during the crack epidemic of the 80s and 90s, Jackson dealt drugs when he wasn't "killing time" at school or boxing at a local gym. His grandparents assumed he was at after-school programs when he was out selling crack. In tenth grade, Jackson was caught with guns and drug money passing through the metal detectors at Andrew Jackson High School in Queens. In 1994, Jackson was arrested again for selling vials of cocaine to an undercover officer, and three weeks later he was arrested yet-again after police found heroin, crack cocaine, and a starter pistol in his home. Jackson was sentenced to 3 to 9 years in prison, but opted to join a 6 month boot camp program and get his GED. Around this time, Jackson began going by "50 Cent," inspired by deceased Brooklyn stick-up man Kelvin "50 Cent" Martin.
After leaving drug dealing to pursue a rap career, he released his debut album Guess Who's Back Again in 2002. He was discovered by Eminem and Dr. Dre and then signed to Interscope Records. He has since released Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2003), The Massacre (2006), Curtis (2007) and Before I Self Destruct (2009).
50 Cent has engaged in feuds with other rappers including Jay-Z, Ja Rule, The Game, Cam'ron, Fat Joe, and Rick Ross. He has also pursued an acting career, appearing in the semi-autobiographical film Get Rich or Die Tryin' in 2005, the Iraq War film Home of the Brave in 2006, and Righteous Kill in 2008. 50 Cent is one of the richest hip-hop performers, having a net worth estimated at US $440 million in 2008.
Before 50 Cent ever inked a major deal, he built up a substantial fan base in New York through underground mixtapes. 50 Cent met up with Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC and was signed to his label to write all of Jay’s music. After he’d left JMJ, he signed to Columbia Records in 1996. On this label, he released Power of the Dollar, and the singles How to Rob and Ghetto Qua Ran. Columbia Records released him from the label after being shot on May 24th, 2000.
Around this time, Eminem had heard one of 50 Cent’s demo tapes and expressed a huge interest in him on MTV, as did Dr. Dre. Shortly after this, 50 Cent officially signed to Interscope Records. He was the first rapper to sign to the joint label owned by Dr. Dre and Eminem. The first song he released on this record was entitled Wanksta and was featured on the 8 Mile soundtrack.
In its first week of release, his debut ”Get Rich Or Die Tryin’” sold 872,000 units - easily reaching Gold status. Within the second week it went Platinum (1 mil) and on April 12th, 2004 the RIAA certified it six times Platinum.
In 2005 he followed the success of his album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ with a new release - The Massacre (originally called St. Valentines Day Massacre until the release date was pushed back). The first single released off this, Disco Inferno, was a huge hit - he followed this hit up by the release of Candy Shop and then again with Just a Lil Bit.
In 2003 Interscope Records allowed 50 Cent to have his own label - G-Unit Records. He first signed Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo and Young Buck as the established members of G-Unit Records. In 2004, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent had signed The Game under a joint venture.
Altered Ego
50 Cent Lyrics

Kiss you from head to toe
Nibble on your neck
Take everything we did before
To another level
Rub your back while I'm kissing
On your nable
Sometimes I like to clown
Make the neighbors all up set
Make you scream my name
Pulling on your head
When the cops come knocking
I say
It's my altered ego
That makes me do the things I do to you
My altered ego
And you'll never know the next move
I'll put in you
Keep you guessing, keep you guessing
Keep you thinking, keep you thinking
Then I'm a slow it down
Speed it, beat it, do it all over again
This ain't no
Sexy session, sexy session
I'm lethal weapon, lethal weapon
I got that stamina
Make it last all night
Like engineers going going
Stop switch to my gentlemen's tone
Whisper in your ear with a sweet little tone
Yo-hoo turn around it let it hoo
Your sexy you turning me into a bad boy
Sometimes I wanna clown
And throw you on the bed
Make the neighbors all up set
Make you scream my name
Pulling on your head
When the cops come knocking
I say
It's my altered ego
That makes me do the things I do to you
My altered ego
And you'll never know the next move
I'll put in you
Keep you guessing, keep you guessing
Keep you thinking, keep you thinking
Then I'm a slow it down
Speed it, beat it, do it all over again
This ain't no
Sexy session, sexy session
I'm lethal weapon, lethal weapon
I got that stamina
Make it last all night
Like engineers going going
One side of me
Is a gentleman, a missionary man
The other side of me
Makes me wanna wild out, show out
Maybe let a friend watch
Ohh o o o ohh
Here we go
Ohh o o o ohh
I'm about to loose control
Ohh o o o ohh
It's my altered ego
That makes me do the things that I do to you
My altered ego
And you'll never know the next move
I'll put on you
In "Altered Ego," 50 Cent explores the concept of duality and how different aspects of his personality come into play during intimate moments with his partner. The lyrics depict a sexual encounter where 50 Cent reveals his alter ego, a side of him that enjoys pushing boundaries and exploring new levels of pleasure. He admits that he takes pleasure in engaging in various sexual acts, such as kissing from head to toe, nibbling on his partner's neck, and pushing boundaries to satisfy his desires.
The alter ego pushes him to take their sexual experience to another level, comforting his partner by rubbing her back while kissing her navel. He reveals a playful side by joking and throwing his partner on the bed, intentionally causing a disturbance that upsets the neighbors. He enjoys hearing his partner scream his name and pulls her hair to intensify their passion. However, he acknowledges that their sexual encounters occasionally attract unwanted attention, symbolized by the cops knocking on the door.
The chorus emphasizes the alter ego's influence on 50 Cent's behavior. It presents his alter ego as the driving force behind his actions, leading him to do things that excite and surprise his partner. The alter ego keeps his partner guessing and constantly thinking about what he will do next. The lyrics also suggest that this altered state of mind allows him to switch between aggressive and gentle behaviors, giving him control over the intensity and pace of their encounters.
As the song progresses, 50 Cent switches to a more tender tone, whispering sweetly in his partner's ear. This shift represents another side of his alter ego, demonstrating his ability to switch between different personas. Despite his sensual approach, he maintains his dominant nature, symbolized by the phrase "turning me into a bad boy," implying that his partner's presence awakens this side of him. He again mentions the desire to engage in playful antics that disrupt the peace and possibly involve others in their intimate moments.
The lyrics continue to emphasize the power of 50 Cent's alter ego, suggesting that it provides him with the stamina to last all night. He likens himself to an engineer, a metaphorical representation of his ability to effectively navigate and maintain their sexual experience. In this part of the song, he portrays himself as a lethal weapon, implying that he possesses the necessary skills and techniques to bring satisfaction to his partner.
The song concludes by highlighting the unpredictable nature of his alter ego. 50 Cent hints that he may surprise his partner in unforeseen ways, leaving her always wondering and anticipating their next encounter. By referencing his alter ego as the force behind his actions, the song explores the idea that these behaviors are not necessarily typical of his everyday personality but rather a distinct manifestation during intimate moments.
