Too Sick to Pray
A-3 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm in a lonely room
Hank Williams sings a lovesick blues
Winter's walking up the avenue
But I ain't seen the sunshine since the 6th o' June
But i tell ya this

Don't call the doctor
I'm gonna get better
don't run for the priest
I'm gonna find some faith
Just because I burned my bible baby
It don't mean I'm too sick to pray

I'm in a crowded place yeah
But i can't recognise a single face
And they say the thrill is in the chase
Well i ain't got the legs i ain't got the legs to run that race
But i tell ya this

Don't call the doctor
I'm gonna get better
don't run for the priest
I'm gonna find some faith

Just because I burned my bible baby
It don't mean I'm too sick to pray

Better burn a candle bright
Raise up some ghosts tonight

They say I made my money messing up young minds
Stopped the congregation n i left em all cryin
In the rain, yeah left em with their pain
Exit your boy with his ill gotten gains
Well the blood runs deep and the blood runs cold
As the knife slits on another sucker is born
Thrown into this world alone
Doctor came a'knockin wasn't nobody home

Ease the pain

Don't call the doctor
I'm gonna get better
don't run for the priest
I'm gonna find some faith

Just because I burned my bible baby
It don't mean I'm too sick to pray

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of A-3's song "Too Sick to Pray" provide a rich exploration of the themes of redemption, loss, and faith. The first verse of the song finds the singer in a lonely room with only Hank Williams' lovesick blues for company. As winter approaches, he confesses that he has not seen the sunshine since June 6th. Despite his desolation, he insists he will get better, telling listeners not to call a doctor, and that he will find some faith. He further claims that even though he burned his bible, it doesn't mean he's too sick to pray.

The second verse finds the singer in a crowded place, unable to connect with anyone, and bemoaning his lack of legs to run the race of life. He again asserts his determination to get better, insisting that he will find faith regardless of his actions, even if he has burned his bible. The final verse seems to offer a glimpse into the singer's past, suggesting that he made his fortune by corrupting young minds and causing pain. Ultimately, he seems resigned to his fate, acknowledging that the world is a cruel and unforgiving place, and seeking only to ease his pain.

Overall, the song offers a poignant exploration of the human experience of loss, loneliness, and despair. It suggests that even in our darkest moments, we have a capacity for hope and redemption.

I met my partner & mother of our daughter grooving to Alabama 3 at Beautiful days fest in 2008.......so we have a very special love for them. Still sad about the premature departure of Jake (AKA Rev D. Wayne Love).....in another time,in another place, I dream of getting stoned & grooving to some sweet techno country music sounds of the mighty A3 again.

I lost my good friend Francis this year. He introduced me to this band in the nineties and was their biggest fan. He even managed to blag his way on stage in Glasgow when one of the singers spotted him dancing with a horses head on and invited him up. My life is better for knowing Francis and Alabama 3.

@outatisater7943

+Steven Carrigan So did you pray? For your good friend..

@Mazarbull420

+outatis ater OMG dude... he was just commenting on how this song touches him deeply for his friend. I'm sure you pushing your religious ideology on people wasn't what he intended his comment to do. If he wanted to or did pray for his friend it's none of your business. Maybe you should take a second and realize not everyone subscribes to your ideas. That doesn't make them any less of a good person nor does it mean they mourn any less for their friend. But your passive aggressive bullshit is not helpful to anyone. A good Christian would have just said something like "I'm sorry for your loss and my prayers are with him." At no point in time should a "good" Christian try to make someone feel like less of a person.

@outatisater7943

Ryan Hulse I just made a question, i didn't get any answer.
The only reason i made this question was in order to understand if his comment is meaningfull or meaningless. An answer in this question would determine that.

@Mazarbull420

So you try to guilt them into saying something?!  Why can't someone just share a memory that a song brings up?  Why does that mean they have to bow to your ideas to prove something meaningful?  I lost my parents at a young age and if you had asked me that I would have blocked you and told you to push your agenda on small weak minded people such as yourself.  Strong minded  individuals don't have to bow to a fictional character.

@outatisater7943

Ryan Hulse I am not trying to guilt anyone, how could i? Neither i am asking someone to bow to any ideas. I just try to understand if there is any meaning in the comment of that guy.
But you are the one who tries to make other people bow to your ideas by indicating God is a "fictional character". You are doing exactly what you convict. The irony is stunning.
I have just one question. If instead of your parents you are the one who dies and your parents keep living, then would you like your parents not to pray in order God to rest your soul? Would you like to neglect you like this? Prayer does help, even if someone is in hell but you pray for him then he finds peace for the moment you pray. So, don't forget the deads and pray for them.
Now i push you my ideas but you asked for it.
