My personal story with R4s is a really long and complicated one.

Chapter 1: The beginning.
[Everything here takes place around 2009, although dsis were out, everyone involved still used lites]
I first came into contact with it when my cousins from Germany had one. Seeing that they were able to play all those games in one card was insane. (yes all these games they had on it were pirated copies) but since they came bi-anually from a different country I couldn't really taste it all that much UNTIL the day my other cousin that lived in the same town as me got one for her birthday. When I asked them where they got that card, they said they bought it from a man, they refused to tell me who he was or where he was located. They also made clear that the guy was so generous and even downloaded some games for them, other sellers apparently charged extra for this. (So basically people made a business out of selling kids r4 cards with pirated games and charging them for each game that they downloaded for free online, making kids thing that these cards are legit)
There were also some kids in school running DSTT cards but i never had one officially until I eventually lost my DS in 2012.

Chapter 2: The Timebomb.
After years of not having anything, i finally got a New 3DS XL in 2016 (talk about luck, Everytime i get a new console it's always shortly before the next generation)
2 years later in 2018 there was a time where I had no access to phone or computer. I had my DS but no games so with the last money i had I went on a local listings webpage and found that same Gold Pro R4 that you did. 25€ with 32GB of storage included, a few games on it too. Now usually timebombs trigger months or years after obtaining the R4, but mine triggered after only 3 DAYS. And it was quite an aggressive one too. I had no money to get a new one but my friend offered me his old DSTT card saying i could just flash its firmware onto my SD and continue to play on it. But it didn't work, not only did the Timebomb brick the r4, it corrupted my whole SD card, it was dead. I had a mental breakdown that day

Chapter 3: redemption.
In may 2021 i decided to give this whole R4 thing one more shot. I found one on Amazon with 32GB and a "no-timebomb guarantee" and that one still works to this day. It runs on the wood-kernel which is my favorite R4 firmware because it also has built in Emulation for various other older consoles.
Nowadays I tend to buy R4s every now and then and set them up with non Timebomb kernels.

UPDATE (again): Among the vast list of other things ruined by the onslaught of the pandemic, it looks like the R4i Gold 3DS Plus is no longer being manufactured. The company's website appears to be down and I can't find any listings for it anymore, so I have no choice but to instead recommend the card I featured in this video with RGF's YSMenu installed.

I'm 19 and do it even more than when I was a kid. Mostly I had neighbors steel movies and games for me, but eventually I put GBA games and such on my Ipod and after that I started doing it even more. Today I moved my games from my Acekard 2i to my R4 Gold and downloaded some new ones. Really enjoying Rune Factory 3 rn
I encourage buying games when you can but sometimes a game is either to much money, not available, or not high-priority for people. Older games and games which are somewhat new but stuck on an older system (PS3, Xbox 360, 3DS, DS, Gameboy Advance, PSP, PS Vita, GameCube, Wii U etc) I don't even think there should be a big "moral" argument about. Like bruh Nintendo and Gamefreak ain't making half a cent on me buying Pokèmon Soulsilver for $150 CAD off some guy on Facebook Marketplace

@Syddy it's illegal. it can be legal in some cases but not with Nintendo. yes you bought the game, yes that's your data that you own. But buying a Nintendo game still means that Nintendo has a Copyright on it's code and being able to dump your roms requires some form of code alteration, which may not fall under piracy but definitely under copyright infringement.

Playing them on an r4 card is definitely piracy tho because you're redistributing the game, even if you're just doing it for yourself.

My friend had an R4 for his DSi when we were kids and I was absolutely mesmerized by it. I thought it was so cool to be able to play any game you wanted all on one cartridge. Fast-forward almost 10 years and he got an R4 for me for Christmas and it's been a blast. I definitely think it's a neat piece of hardware even if it's a little hard to know what you're getting.

maaan, this video hit me hard with nostalgia. When I got my first ds, my mom couldn't afford the games so she just gave me the R4 card and it came with a bunch of weird, third party games, but I loved them so much. And obviously the classics too, mario party, mario kart and all that.
One day the thing just stopped working, and now I know why lol.

When I bought my first R4 flashcart I actually got it on Amazon, this was before the landmark court order than made them illegal to sell. You could buy it in pretty much every independent game store too until the law change, which also killed their business in chipping consoles. It was pretty crazy thinking back just how mainstream pirating had become at that time, I remember so many people with pirated PS2s, DS's and PSP's. As a broke kid though it saved me from playing the same games over and over and having a world of variety to choose from, like living in a game shop/blockbuster for real.

Back then people made real Business with piracy too. The target audience for these flashcarts were kids who had no idea of how to set them up. So stores would charge them a small fee for every game they wanted preloaded on their R4s. It was a malicious win/win. The kids only paid 2$ instead of 20-40$ per game while sellers basically made big money selling stuff that they downloaded online for free

If the card time bombs, you can usually go to the manufacturers website and download updated firmware. Of course it will time bomb again in a couple of years, but as long as they provide updated firmware, you're good to go.

$7 for that level of quality of a flash cartridge?! Now I feel guilty that I made my parents hand over $35 for a standard R4 Gold 2 with 100 games at the San Fernando Swapmeet which is basically a Mexican flea market when I was 8. Still, the cartridge contains some of the best childhood memories I have, New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 DS, both Mario and Luigi games made for DS, Pokémon HeartGold, Yoshi Touch and Go, Sonic Colors, Kirby Superstar Ultra, so much MORE that I loved. I was stoked as hell playing it on my DSi XL, and even more stoked when I had my friend homebrew my 3DS XL and it was now playable on there after I thought it would never boot up on my 3DS after many disappointing failed attempts before CFW was installed. I played the hell out of that cartridge for 5 years, but sadly the SD Card got stuck inside a random little hole in my PC and I was never able to get it out. I still have that cartridge, I keep it to remind me of better times inside my New 3DS XL case. I had CFW on the 3DS, and I had a bunch of my games on there through CFW, about 7. I later on found Twilight Menu++ and I reinstalled new ROMS of my childhood favorites, and I go back and play those sometimes more than my 3DS Games. Luigi’s Mansion? Yeah that’s great but it doesn’t have Baby Mario being guided by little clouds in the dawn sky. Smash 3DS is excellent but who the fuck cares because it doesn’t have Meta Knight’s Revenge. Yo-Kai Watch 2 is incredible, but I kinda have to leave it early since Typhlosion and Red Gyrados give me death glares when I play inferior RPGs.

@Dad Dad after x years The card will "stop working" prompting you to update your card firmware. It's not something bad, your save files, games and everything is still working, they just want you to stay up to date with their latest firmware.

I have the regular R4 cart and didn't know there was a time bomb, assumed something was wrong with my sd card so I went and got the latest kernel from the site and it worked. My cart is 2017 so kernels for the newer carts will work on the older carts. Also had an R4 as a kid but broke later on because I didn't take care of it lol

Hey everybody! Quick story that you might find interesting: when I was 4 I got a ds that came with an r4 card, it isn’t the gold. It is a solid black colour with no website to been seen. As a kid, it time-bombed on me (probably why the dude my parents bought it from was selling it) but maybe since it wasn’t the gold or the ds was already garbage, the card crashed and froze before it could completely Timebomb. I still have the original ds and r4 and am currently 15, 11 years later and it still boots up half the time.

TLDR: my timebomb glitched because my ds is shit

Clarification: the card runs completely fine, but if you try to cheat on any of the games or delete save files it totally crashes. It also isn’t the one for 3ds. Either I’m dumb (likely) or the card has been diffused (possible but not likely)

Is anyone going to talk about how the time bomb is literally just to make you update the kernel on the card? It's to account for firmware updates and such, it doesn't kill the card and you didn't need to buy a new card. I have an R4i for my DS Lite I've used since like 2010 and as soon as the bomb triggered I Googled the issue and low and behold you just had to download the new kernal, but at the time I think I ended up messing with the date just because I was at my grandma's without a computer.

Tbh i've never gotten this timebomb message, i got different messages because of corrupted data or because i put the wrong micro sd card in

One time i broke my cartridge by accidentally deleting the important file while making space for new games. I could fix it by reinstalling the file, but then the games had gamebreaking glitches like in professor layton you could only do one thing and after that the game would soft lock

I wholly expected this to fail most of the tests. Plus, while you mentioned there are better ones out there, if you know how flash carts work, you probably have enough know how to avoid the time bomb. I'll probably get one of these just to dip my toes in and see how it works. Great video!

When I bought my DS lite, it came with an R4. Still works to this day, but my DS doesn't work as it used to, so someday I might have to get a new one to sue on my 3DS.

I guess that's one of the reasons why Nintendo stopped doing business in my country. Most of us would just get a flashcard or crack the console to play games for free

I had the R4 a few years after it first came out... then an Acekard 2i following. There was huge competition for flash cards back in the 00s but shit those two seemed to be the best for value. the OG R4 sucked because it forced boot past the DS menu- later DSes beat this method

gotta say... it made the experience better- all your games in one via cart (digital before it was legal and cool) and the ability to add cheats and homebrew for DS was amazing.

I looked around to find the specific file that contains the time bomb. It is the r4.dat file in the main directory. If someone knew a trick to be able to read that file, it couldn't be that hard to remove the timebomb or delay it for a hundred years. The card still has its uses though.

I've run into the timebomb before. I just downloaded a newer firmware version from their website and it was fine. I'd only worry about it once their website ceases to exist.

I had a CycloDS Evolution when I was a kid and it could handle everything on your gauntlet, no problem. I regularly connected it to Battle Revolution. It had Action Replay functionality built in too.

I remember as a child my sister who was much older gave us two R4 cards. It was the only source of some DS games we had such as Mario Party DS.
It also allowed cheats! Playing new super Mario Bros with cheats was very interesting, especially always giant, superstar shell

Ahh yes the NDS flash carts. I had a very obscure one called the CycloDS. It was by far the best imo since they had super fast updates for the anti-piracy measures back in the day and the UI was much nicer than the Wood/R4 cards of the era. I bought it when the DS lite was out and it still works fine on my New 3ds XL. Makes for one solid system for emulation as well.

Actually, I bought the one back in 2018 and a year later I got the timebomb triggered.
The solution was pretty simple, as I just downloaded a new version of the firmware from the "official" website.
Everything is still working perfectly! And it looks like I'll have to do it again somewhere in summer..

As a kid I remember all of my friends had an R4 and I always wanted one, but they didn't sell it where I lived, if you wanted one you either ordered it online or travelled, and ordering online was still shady back then so I never had one, finally I got myself one 3 years ago, It felt like a childhood dream finally accomplished

oh my god. My first console was a Nintendo DS, got it for my birthday when I was 9. I didn't actually get proper game cartridges for it and had emulations from an R4 card. This just gave me so much memories and nostalgia. When I got a 3DS I was so confused that you actually had to BUY separate cartridges to play games cos I was used to emulations

I have the exact same R4 Gold card (although I can't remember if it's 2018 or 2019). I got the timebomb message in the wild, but all I did was update the firmware and it worked just fine afterwards. It's currently in my Pikachu 2DS, and runs just fine. Thanks for the heads-up about the alternative kernel though. I think I'll make the switch.

Back when I was around 8-9 years old, my Grandmother bought me a Nintendo DS for my birthday. I only had around 3 games at the time. Later that month my father took me to a local flea market and there was a booth dedicated to the sales of Flashcards! The R4 & TTS card were the biggest ones on the market. I still remember picking one up for $60 CAD and having it jam-packed with tons of NDS games + GBA too! Though you are right! They did have timebombs on them.

I was pretty naive back then and spent over $300 on several R4 flashcards over the span of 4 years! But then I had the Nintendo DSi with countless firmware updates! To this day I still have an R4i Gold 3DS Pro card without a timebomb from 2015 so... I guess I must have a genuine/custom model. Though I bought it from Amazon at the time!

I have the original R4i from waaay back, I was too young to fully make use of it but always wanted to keep my library of lost cartridges and play stuff never released overseas.
Am I safe to just boot it back in whatever console or would me not having touched it and using it on my 3DS bring me any troubles?

I actually have the original R4 card that I got with my ds lite back in the day. I remember losing my ds charger and forgetting the reasons I loved the ds. But after watching this video and seeing that black card with reflective lighting it reminds me of my childhood and I’m sure to buy the charger now :)

I really love the akmenu emulator since it fools the R4 to think that it’s 1970, so time still passes but is far far away for that time bomb to activate, been using for almost a decade and the R4 thinks it’s 1979 xD

Somehow, I was walking through my local park in 2015, while there was a mini marketplace running, and one of the stalls had a bunch of 3DS comparable R4 cards with a bunch of preloaded games. At the time, I had no clue how copyright and piracy worked, and just knew that R4 had a bunch of games, so I got one. In retrospect, it was clearly piracy, and I feel dirty for having got the card.

@jehezz honestly if you just follow the instructions to the letter there's no risk and you'll be fine. the only difficult part of hacking a switch is getting one with the right serial and then putting the switch into rcm jig. some of the tutorials out there are a lil trash but if you find someone who knows how to do it you can just ask them for help

this is making me miss my SuperCard DStwo. it was such a powerful flash cart because of the added hardware, which allowed it to be able to launch and play GBA and SNES games with the companion homebrew emulators, and open source efforts improving the compatibility by quite a bit. Too bad I can't find it, or its alleged successor, anywhere anymore.

Also wish I didn't throw out my Acekard 2i; at the time there wasn't much I could do because it was an original run model that couldn't accept firmware updates. Now, that same model could have accepted a firmware flash to make it an NTR boot card, which would then let me jailbreak a fresh 3DS system pretty easily. Foresight, right?

If anyone wants it (if anything, for the nostalgia of the crappy kernel's menus) I have a R4i 3D 2014 that still works with the original kernel it came with. I can dump an image of my SD card or something.
It came bundled with my 3DS XL (downtown shops do that sometimes).

@Sir Lezard so basically y0u have to convert a ps1 rom to a pbp file (psp) amd then you have to convert it to cia. It's a fairly easy process if you have the programs that do it for you. There are some good YouTube videos out there

R4s on 3DS is kinda bummer because you cant play 3DS games, only DS games. If you want to play both games you need to homebrew it, there are tons of tutorials online, homebrew basically lets you do anything on your 3DS and if you have spare time just take a crack at it and you'll be glad you done it

I've tested a number of multicarts by setting the time five and even ten years ahead and nothing. But if it does concern one, and one doesn't absolutely need one's old console to tell one it's time to go to work, then just set the clock back.

I always had M3 and felt like such a bad boy for having that when everyone else used R4. And it actually still works, although I think it fell victim to the washing machine once. Actually, it is even the second M3 card I had, because of me losing the first one somewhere in my elementary school. Man, I was a dumb kid xD Today I wouldn't dare to pirate games anymore. I earn money, and it is a pleasure for me to spend it for games that I deeply appreciate.

This is a really good video, got a bit nostalgia,
I remember having something similar to that, when I was a child (and still to this day) legitimate games were crazy expensive, mostly because our currency is ass, and I only have that catridge, Whenever we want a new game, we got to write a list of games to a piece of paper, Go to the shady ass game store, and give the list to the one of the employees, That employee would then load the pirated games we wanted (we don't know it's pirated at the time, thought it was the real deal). Usually 1 pirated game is less than a dollar (maybe a couple of cents or even lower). So we usually got back home with like 30 different games. I never see a DSi here, So I only have a DS lite. It's actually ain't half bad. But mine loads faster, and the it can run almost every game (except for Black and White 2), the only problem is that it some games (like Rune factory 2) sometimes lags, making some of the bosses to be easier

@Chronicle Zombie I always thought they used some kind of bluetooth/wireless technology. Then I discovered the SD card readers for my computer. (P.S I used to have one of these when I was a child and i still have it. I do not know how it survived my extensive abuse to it thru childhood but it still works LMAO 😂)

I remember how it started with one kid in our class having this card and everyone looked at him like he was a god. Eventually me and my friend got one and we were the only 3 people in class having the card and months later everyone that had a ds would have one of these cards.. I may not had a r4 but i had something else that could do the same and actually had a lot of customization for the UI and all. I lost this card a few years ago and to this day im still searching everywhere in the house once in a while since i really want to see whats on it since it was a big part of my childhood.

My favourite flash card for ds is supercardDStwo, it boots all games perfectly (incl wii connect, at least for geometry wars) and works on 3ds. Aaaaaand it doesn't have time bomb :)) As for cheap r4- I flashed it with ntrBoot, ultimate anti brick 3ds tool (and for installing CFW on 3ds)

Man, I found a DSL for 2 leva ($1.30 in US dollars). It had a card like this one, I asked my friend for a Mario cart copy, when i found out everything worked, I downloaded like 100 games, best 1 dollar spent 10/10 would recommend.

Actually Pokemon Soulsilver has better loading times on my R4 card. I made a side-by-side comparison with the original game and the R4 with 2 DSs by entering and exiting a building. The transitions where consistenly faster on the R4, no idea why.

I used to have a purple R4 flash cartridge with SM64DS, Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Bros, Sonic Colors, Plant Vs Zombies, Mario And Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story and Partners In Time and the list goes on, it was tons of fun, until I accidentally broke the SD card inside of it.

never had one. the DS Lite was my first console, when i got it back in 2006. ironically, i only was 2 years old at the time. still have the original navy blue DS i used to play on in 2007 - 2009.
