When I Kissed The Teacher
ABBA Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody screamed when I kissed the teacher
And they must have thought they dreamed when I kissed the teacher
All my friends at school
They had never seen the teacher blush, he looked like a fool
Nearly petrified 'cause he was taken by surprise
When I kissed the teacher
Couldn't quite believe his eyes, when I kissed the teacher
My whole class went wild
As I held my breath, the world stood still, but then he just smiled
I was in the seventh heaven when I kissed the teacher

One of these days
Gonna tell him I dream of him every night
One of these days
Gonna show him I care, gonna teach him a lesson alright

I was in a trance when I kissed the teacher
Suddenly I took the chance when I kissed the teacher
Leaning over me, he was trying to explain the laws of geometry
And I couldn't help it, I just had to kiss the teacher

One of these days
Gonna tell him I dream of him every night
One of these days
Gonna show him I care, gonna teach him a lesson alright

What a crazy day, when I kissed the teacher
All my sense had flown away when I kissed the teacher
My whole class went wild
As I held my breath, the world stood still, but then he just smiled
I was in the seventh heaven when I kissed the teacher
(I want to hug, hug, hug him)
When I kissed the teacher
(I want to hug, hug him)
When I kissed the teacher
(I want to hug, hug, hug him)
When I kissed the teacher
(I want to hug, hug him)

When I kissed the teacher
(I want to hug, hug, hug him)

Overall Meaning

ABBA's "When I Kissed The Teacher" is a bubbly, upbeat song that sheds light on a girl's dream of her teacher. The lyrics describe her crazy day at school when she kissed her teacher, leaving her classmates astounded. The chorus repeats her desire to hug and show affection to her teacher, and she dreams of him every night. The song embodies the thrill of youth and infatuation in a humorous tone, with the use of catchy melodies and lyrics.

The opening line of the song, "Everybody screamed when I kissed the teacher," sets the tone for what's to come. The girl is telling the story of how she kissed her teacher, and she imagined that everyone screamed in surprise. The following lines indicate that the teacher was also surprised and blushed when it happened, indicating that this might not be a mutual desire. However, the girl was in the seventh heaven, suggesting that it was a memorable moment for her, at least.

The second verse offers a little more backstory, with the teacher leaning over her and trying to explain geometry. Suddenly, the girl takes a chance and kisses him, leaving the world standing still. The chorus then repeats, with the girl expressing her desire to show affection and teach him a lesson, suggesting that she's trying to win him over, even if he might not feel the same way.

Overall, "When I Kissed The Teacher" is a light-hearted song that teases the idea of a schoolgirl crush. The lyrics are playful and innocent, capturing the essence of young love and teenage dreams.

Crazy Hai

I sincerely hope YOU were still a kid too, when u had that crush on a seventh-grader. This is just meant to be a fun song, about innocent fantasies adolescents can develop. But let's be clear - it is NEVER appropriate for adults, to enter romantic or sexual interactions with minors (unless the age difference is very small. Though that can still lead to trouble).

I'm actually a psychologist. Adolescents often go through a natural stage of sexuality development, where they have strong crushes on people who SHOULD be unobtainable (such as celebrities, teachers, etc.)

It is MEANT to be a safe way, for the developing brain to learn about feelings of attraction - WITHOUT getting into real relationships. Intense relationships that happen too early, can cause serious harm to the CHILD. So developing crushes that are likely to be unrequited, usually allow experiences of attraction (and how to manage them), without an actual relationship (which would often be too soon for the developing child to cope with).

So this is why adults should NEVER act on the crushes of minors. Usually, the minor ends up psychologically damaged - and the adult often ends up in jail. It's an abuse of trust.

Fair enough, if they still fancy a teacher when they are of age - and NOT in the teacher's class anymore. Then it's probably a genuine, long-lasting attraction (and the chances of harm are much lessened, when the student is of age). But under NO CIRCUMSTANCES is it appropriate, for teachers to get involved with adolescents.

Bands come and go, some bands are forgotten, but ABBA will stay in our hearts and minds forever. Even so many years after they split up, their music is still awsome

This song best shows off their skill of multi-layering the backing vocals to make that classic "ABBA" sound. Two singers never before sounded like ten voices. Just brilliant!
