Sober Up
AJR Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello, hello
I'm not where I'm supposed to be
I hope that you're missing me
'Cause it makes me feel young

Hello, hello
Last time that I saw your face
Was recess in second grade
And it made me feel young

Won't you help me sober up
Growing up it made me numb
And I want to feel something again

Won't you help me sober up
All the big kids they are drunk
And I want to feel something again
Won't you help me feel something again
How's it go again?

Goodbye, goodbye
I said to my bestest buds
We said that we'd keep in touch
And we did our best

All my new friends
We smiled at party time
But soon we forgot to smile
At anything else

Won't you help me sober up
Growing up it made me numb
And I want to feel something again
Won't you help me sober up
All the big kids they are drunk
And I want to feel something again
Won't you help me feel something again
How's it go again?
How's it go again?

My favorite color is you
You're vibrating out my frequency
My favorite color is you
You keep me young and that's how I wanna be

My favorite color is you
You're vibrating out my frequency
My favorite color is you
You keep me young and that's how I wanna be

Hello, hello
I'm not where I'm supposed to be
I hope that you're missing me
'Cause it makes me feel young

Hello, hello
Last time that I saw your face
Was recess in second grade
And it made me feel young

And I wanna feel something again
I just wanna feel something again
How's it go again?

Won't you help me sober up
Growing up it made me numb
And I want to feel something again

Won't you help me sober up
All the big kids they are drunk
And I want to feel something again
Won't you help me feel something again?

Can I finally feel something again?
How's it go again?

Overall Meaning

The song Sober Up by AJR is a nostalgic tune about growing up, feeling numb, and wanting to feel something again. The lyrics describe a longing for a time when things were simpler and the innocence of youth. The song begins with the singer admitting that they are not where they are supposed to be, which could be a metaphor for feeling lost and disconnected from their past. They hope that the person they are singing to is missing them because it makes them feel young, which shows a desire to recapture the carefree spirit of childhood.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "Won't you help me sober up," which can be interpreted in multiple ways. On one hand, it could refer to a desire to quit drinking alcohol or taking drugs to escape the discomfort of growing up. On the other hand, it could represent a plea to find something that makes life feel more vibrant and exciting again. The second verse depicts the singer saying goodbye to old friends and trying to fit in with new ones, but ultimately feeling unfulfilled. The bridge of the song declares that the singer's favorite color is the person they are singing to because they keep them young, which reinforces the theme of wanting to feel youthful and alive again.

Overall, Sober Up is a relatable song that speaks to the universal desire to feel connected, alive, and young. It uses nostalgia and vivid imagery to paint a picture of a person struggling to find meaning and purpose in the process of growing up.

@amanda_marie1643

This reminds me of my friend.

We were friends in first grade, until he moved to Conneticut. We said we’d keep in touch, but I never heard from him.

Turns out he was killed in Sandy Hook.

Not a day goes by I don’t miss him.

Rest In Peace, Chase 💚
