A Constant Knowledge of Death was founded in 2012 by guitarist/bassist/vocalist James Goldmann and guitarist Aaron Gutierrez under the name Exiles & Vagrants. Their name was later shortened to Vagrants, and changed altogether to A Constant Knowledge of Death in 2014. ACKOD's sound is rooted primarily in post-metal/progressive metal, with additional electronic, ambient, and spoken word elements. After cycling through several members early on, the group solidified their lineup by adding Aki McCullough (also of Vivid Illusion and [/Dreamwell]) contributing additional guitars/electronics, and Mark Rivas (also of Vampire Squid, Madrost, Dystopian, and Parabolic) on drums.
ACKOD's debut album, Vol. I: Enculturation, was released in 2015. The underlying themes of the album touch on examination of society and technology, mirrored in the stark, harsh guitar tones and digital, industrial sampling. The album's mastering was done by Magnus Andersson, of Endarker Studios and black metal group Marduk.
The album's follow-up and counterpart, Vol. II: Organic Emotions, was released in 2016. ACKOD's second release saw the band take a more introspective focus, with less angular guitar parts and electronic sampling and shifting towards a warmer, more natural sound. Mastering on Vol. II was done by Cult of Luna's Magnus Lindberg.
Throughout ACKOD's tenure, the band has taken a DIY approach to the album creation process, with recording in various locales done by the band members themselves. Guitarist Aki McCullough has served as the band's primary producer, collecting a series of initially unconnected recordings for each album and unifying the band's overall sound.
DISSECTING A ONE-WINGED BIRD is the band's first effort since their four albums released in 2019, comprising the totality of Vol. III. Co-written and engineered by band founder James Goldmann and lead guitarist Aki McCullough, then produced, mixed and mastered by the former, "DISSECTING" is 45-minute descent into dissonant death-sludge madness. The two developed the album during the 2020 COVID lockdown in their unfinished basement while Aki simultaneously began her transition, emerging with a chip on their shoulders and taking it out on everyone - from cops, to TERFS, to God. ACKOD has never sounded more ferociously aggressive. ACKOD in 2023 also finds all their members on the same coast for the first time since their inception. With co-founder and guitarist Aaron Gutierrez moving out to the Boston area, and the recruitment of the astoundingly talented Arianna Trautmann on drums, the collective will finally begin playing out on the east coast regularly.

A Constant Knowledge of Death Lyrics

And the smoke billows out
Spiraling
In the opening lyric of "Fracture," A Constant Knowledge of Death vividly describes a scene of destruction and transformation. The blast furnace symbolizes a powerful force that consumes everything in its path, evoking an image of intense heat and pressure. By mentioning the cremation of clay, the band draws a parallel between the raw material and the human body's mortality. The act of cremation is a ritualistic way of dealing with death, highlighting the inevitability of our physical decay and the cycle of life and death. The smoke billowing out from the furnace suggests a release of energy and a visual representation of the cremation process, with its spiraling motion adding a sense of movement and chaos to the imagery.
This imagery of destruction and transformation serves as a metaphor for the broader themes that the band explores in their music, such as the impermanence of life, the struggle against our mortality, and the constant cycle of creation and destruction in the world. By using the blast furnace as a central image, A Constant Knowledge of Death asks the listener to confront the harsh realities of existence and the fragility of human life. The lyrics create a sense of tension and unease, reflecting on the destructive power of nature and the forces that shape our lives beyond our control.
The phrase "blast furnace cremates the clay" also carries a potent symbolism of rebirth and renewal. In the alchemical tradition, fire is seen as a purifying force that transforms base materials into something new and valuable. By associating the cremation process with a blast furnace, the band suggests that from destruction can come creation, and from death can come new life. This idea of transformation through destruction adds a layer of complexity to the lyrics, inviting the listener to consider the deeper meanings behind the imagery and the cyclical nature of existence.
The repeated motif of spiraling smoke further enhances the sense of movement and transformation in the song. The spiral is a powerful symbol of growth, evolution, and change, representing the cyclical nature of life and the interconnectedness of all things. By describing the smoke as spiraling out from the blast furnace, A Constant Knowledge of Death creates a vivid picture of energy and movement, suggesting that even in moments of destruction, there is potential for renewal and growth. The lyrics of "Fracture" encourage us to reflect on the dualities of life and death, destruction and creation, and to find meaning in the constant cycle of change that shapes our existence.
