(1) Ab… Read Full Bio ↴There are at least three (3) artists under the name Aberdeen.
(1) Aberdeen were an American rock band. Their musical style is similar to twee pop. The band formed in 1993 and by 1994 was signed to the seminal British label Sarah Records; they were one of only three American bands signed to Sarah (the other two being East River Pipe and The Springfields). They've also released recordings through Sunday Records and the Tremolo Arm Users Club. After Sarah folded in 1995, so did the band. They reformed in 2001, signed to Tremolo, and released a full-length album, two singles, and a maxi-CD (see discography below).
Possibly the band's biggest exposure came when one of their songs, "Sink or Float," was featured on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The song was also included on the UK edition of the series's second soundtrack album, Radio Sunnydale.
Aberdeen broke up again in 2005 as their members drifted to other projects. Lead singer Beth Arzy-Dean has also been a member of Trembling Blue Stars since 2000.
(2) Aberdeen are a grunge/alternative rock band from Dallas, Texas, comprised of Jake Linder and Matt Boiling.
(3) Aberdeen are a jazz/indie rock brass band based in Brooklyn, New York.
Handsome Drink
Aberdeen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm just a fool with handsome drink
It never fails that I can't sleep
Dreaming of you, I mull and sink
I can't wake up (I don't know what to do when I'm with you)
I can't wake up (I don't know what to do when I'm with you)
I can't wake up
I can't wake
If I could think of things to say
I don't think that I'd act this way
It never fails that I can't speak
I hear your voice and I go weak
I can't wake up (I don't know what to do when I'm with you)
I can't wake up (I don't know what to do when I'm with you)
I can't wake up
I can't wake up
I can't wake
The lyrics of Aberdeen's song "Handsome Drink" appear to be from the perspective of someone who is infatuated and unable to control their emotions when around the person they desire. The mentions of being a "fool" and being unable to sleep or think clearly while dreaming about this person suggest a sense of powerlessness in their attraction. The repeated refrain of "I can't wake up" could represent a desire to stay in the dreamlike state of infatuation, despite the negative effects it has on their ability to function.
The second verse adds to this theme of being unable to communicate or act normally when around the object of their affection. The line "If I could think of things to say / I don't think that I'd act this way" implies that even if the singer were able to articulate their thoughts and feelings, they would still be overwhelmed by their attraction. The mention of "hearing your voice and go[ing] weak" adds to the sense of vulnerability and powerlessness.
Overall, the lyrics of "Handsome Drink" seem to paint a picture of a person who is deeply in love (or maybe just in lust) with someone and feels entirely at their mercy. The repetition of "I can't wake up" suggests a desire to escape from this state, but the song ends without any resolution to this tension.
