1.) An American black metal band with a sound comprised of both thrash and death metal. Formed in Plano, Texas in 1989, the band's name was originally "Dolmen" but this was soon changed to "Absu", drawing thematic influence from esoteric middle-eastern and Celtic mythology. They recorded four albums and an EP from 1993 to 2001. After the release of Tara in 2001 the band was put on hiatus as guitarist and bassist Equitant Ifernain and Shaftiel departed, citing musical differences and disinterest in the band, respectively.
The current line-up is:
Proscriptor McGovern - Vocals (lead), Drums (Proscriptor, ex-Melechesh, ex-Judas Iscariot)
Vis Crom - Guitars (Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, ex-Armageddon, ex-Evil Divine)
Ezezu - Vocals (backing), Bass (ex-Panzram)
In 2007, Proscriptor resurrected Absu, announcing a new line-up and a new (self-titled) album was released in 2009.

Remember the drift of the night's fire?
Where the flames run around with desire
Blazes spread to the fore charring the foe
Granting the competence and burning all
The headmaster of magicians is
The serpent-king and the slayer
To the night with desire
The night's fire dances to a song of fall and wonder
The sultry weapon that calls you here now
The majesty is the power
Which corrupts the offspring (the paltry)
That shall never transpire
And always be denied
That shall never transpire
And always be denied (be declined)
The sun is sable
The moon is weeping
The planets are failing
As the earth starts to shake
The flames look secure
Within all the chaos
The fire sounds safe
Like a voice from the sky
The keys to hereafter
The flaxen-crimson embers
The symbols and the signals of
Destruction and withering
A night's fire is
The portrait of what was
Of what is
Of what is to come
So we shall singe them and
We shall burn them and
We will destroy them to
Remember the pith of the night's fire
The night's fire torches hatred to stone
As the sun turns cold
The stars fall fast and
The earth turns black
The lyrics of Absu's song "Night Fire Canonization" reflect the intensity and chaos of a powerful fire burning in the night. The opening lines "Remember the drift of the night's fire? Where the flames run around with desire" evoke the image of the fire's destructive force, fueled by a passionate, almost sentient energy. This fiery blaze consumes everything in its path, "Granting the competence and burning all" as described in the following lines.
The lyrics also allude to mythological elements, referencing the "headmaster of magicians" and "the serpent-king and the slayer". The possessor of the torches, perhaps a metaphorical representation of the night's fire itself, speaks with desire to the night. The passion and energy of the fire is further conveyed in the line "The night's fire dances to a song of fall and wonder", which suggests an almost seductive quality to its movement.
As the song progresses, the lyrics become more apocalyptic in tone, describing the destruction wrought by the night's fire on a grand scale. The sun and moon take on ominous qualities, while the flames continue to rage with a secure and safe intensity. The song ends with a call to destroy whatever it is that the night's fire represents, to "remember the pith of the night's fire".
