War of the Mind
Acid King Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
War, war of the mind
Hail, hail you come down
You find every reason
Kneel now to your place
You find any reason
Free, free the people
Break down to your knees
You find every reason
Know your place in life
You find any reason
Free, free the people
War, war of the mind
Come by, find your peace
You find every reason
Kneel now to your place
You find any reason
The lyrics of Acid King's "War of the Mind" speak to the idea of mental liberation and the struggle to attain it. The repetition of "free, free the people" and "war, war of the mind" suggests a battle for personal autonomy and emancipation from oppressive forces, be they external or internal. The lines "Hail, hail you come down / You find every reason / Kneel now to your place / You find any reason" seem to address the ways in which individuals may be subjugated to authority and made to acquiesce through fear and a sense of powerlessness. The repeated phrase "you find any reason" suggests that it is not a matter of objective truth or logic that leads to submission, but rather a kind of manufactured reasoning that justifies the status quo.
The final lines of the song, "Come by, find your peace / You find every reason / Kneel now to your place / You find any reason," offer a glimmer of hope, however faint. The idea of finding peace and self-acceptance in the face of overwhelming odds may be seen as a kind of rebellion in itself. Rather than continuing to fight against the forces that seek to control them, the individual finds a way to exist outside of their sphere of influence. "War of the Mind" speaks to the universality of this struggle, and the importance of continuing to fight for one's agency and freedom.
