If you're curious, most of it was fixed by purification of oil put in the cars, since sulfates are present in the oil extracted and the combustion in the engines created the conditions to produce SO3 that is very quick to react with vapour forming H2SO4. The psychology behind what motivates certain actions can be quite interesting. The way you motivate people to solve issues is by showing them (without being condescending) how solving the issue benefits them more and costs them less than not addressing the issue. It wasn't the cartoonishly strong acid generally depicted in media (especially cartoons), its more on the level of soda or coffee, not really a problem if it gets on human skin because its so dilute. But dump enough acid rain in a lake and its pH will drop, and life like fish, molluscs, and plants are a lot more pH sensitive than humans.

I mean.. if it was a much stronger acid falling from the sky your fear would have been valid. The acid(s?) commonly associated with acid rain were/are more of a problem for our buildings, which are continually exposed to the elements. A little bit of that rain making it past your clothes and onto your skin was uncomfortable, and over lots of exposure could be damaging, but it's not like in video games were you would just become goo in seconds.

Global Warming / Climate Change has been a growing issue for the last 30+ years. Clean Water availability for the last 20+. Minimum Wage for 25+.

All the things mentioned as "Solved" were back in the 70s and 80s when people still kind of cared, and politicians weren't manipulating a culture war for shitty reasons so they can do nothing and still get paid. They enacted and followed through on legislation.

yeah, the issue with hope for me comes from reactions when I mention the fact we have to collectively change our buying habits in meaningful ways to make the impacts we want. that we can not just do small things and calling them big changes, which ends up being effectively green washing.

then when I say that person who was saying how we need to stop using plastic straws and bags for the turtles, or palm oil for the ocean, suddenly starts crying about how unreasonable and unfair it is to expect people to stop contributing to animal agriculture (the way bigger factors in destroying the ocean and forests) and how our collective efforts wont effect anything and we shouldn't care about the results of our actions. like they were saying how we need to change for the small contributions to the issue, but then the big causes? oh no suddenly its impossible to collectively make change.

I was born in 2001 and I remember learning about acid rain in elementary school and then it just kinda, never came up again throughout middle and high school. Glad we solved it, but it also makes me kinda frustrated because it proves we CAN fix these things if allowed to.

The things the rich have that they think they can only have by keeping everyone else poor? Everybody could have those things. We could all live somewhere beautiful. Because everywhere could be beautiful. All of our lives could be simple and easy because we live in a time period where everything can be simple and easy. Look at any TikTok about Japanese appliances, they're amazing. We could all have that. Everything could be nice non-toxic water and beautiful flowers and pretty views and fresh food. And it doesn't have to cost an arm, a leg, and millions of poor people struggling their lives away.

@Rubarb Before the year 2000 many softwares used time standards that didn't account for century/millenia changes in order to save memory space; for example, the "19" in "1978" was ommited entirely with maybe some hardcoded workaround to place it back.
By the year 2000 a lot of these software would have broken, and some people were freaking out that it might be the end of the internet and GPS... And yeah the "the world is ending" folks didn't help.

Something similar will happen with the main current standard on the 19 of January, 2038, at 3:14:07 UTC, and many unupdated/unsupported softwares will either go obsolete, or have jank dates everywhere.
Luckily in most cases changing this is as simple as changing the variable definition, and because we have no real memory constraints, many coders just use the longer standard (which would expire long after humanity goes extinct) so there's pretty much no need to worry.

As a Midwest farmer, sulfur deficiencies used to not be an issue in soil fertility thanks to the acid rain. Now we use gypsum, a calcium product that is produced in the capture of sulfur in coal power plant smoke, to supplement soil fertility.

That's pretty dang cool. But I have lots of questions. For example, how does the gypsum capture the sulfate in coal smoke? Is it just...put next to the coal smoke? Is it a natural byproduct of adding something else to the coal smoke, and the sulfate separates into gypsum? I don't know anything about this subject and I am genuinely curious.

Our farm got way too much sulfur from a local plant stack, which displaced selenium in grass uptake, which caused a bunch of birth problems on our sheep & cattle, so for a while we had to do selenium shots on the animals.

Now that the sulfur stack is gone, no more selenium problem, but yeah now we have to add sulfur fertilizer (tiny amount, nothing heavy) to the crop rotation.

Yeah, I remember pictures of damaged forrests in high school and in university hearing of powerplant filtration systems turning the sulphor into plaster of paris amd the airborne ashes into fillers for concrete construction . Unfortunately similar solutions for greenhouse gasses are near impossible, hence the rush to non-fossil power sources and tech to smooth out production fluctuations .

Acid rain and ozone layer being talked about as "scares" that were unfounded is so scary to me. I remember when rain made trees brown. I remember the aerosol cosmetics sitting on a shelf for a good while because no-one was willing to buy them. And the intermediate pump bottles that were used before they got ozone safe certificates for other propellants. There is a reason why hairstyles went flat at the start of the 90's and everything was suddenly pinned. We saw what was happening and people took steps to remedy it.

I love this because, as an AC guy who actually cares deeply about the physics and chemistry of what I'm doing, I find it absolutely astounding that we saw the ozone layer rip has an issue and came together and actually fixed a problem together within a few decades. We altered the chemical state of our entire habitat but on purpose.... now only if we could keep it up

I work at a coal fired power plant, and I totally agree. We rain a watery limestone powder suspension through the flue gas. It washes sulfur oxides out of the gas and reacts into gypsum.

@ae3qe27u3 that's a valid question. No, it doesn't affect the production of fly ash, because the ash is being electrostatically extracted before the sulfur oxides are rained out. This way, we can have the electrostatic dust filter at a high temperature which prevents water vapour and sulfur oxides to combine into sulfuric acid and corrode our electrodes away. The extraction of the sulfur oxides happens at a lower temperature. The piping and the giant pot where this happens is made of glass reinforced plastic with a protective coat of rubber on the inside. This material can withstand the mild sulfuric acid at a pH of 5.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s in Indiana, I remember the rain smelling fresh. Not until I moved to San Diego in the mid 90s did I encounter rain that smells acrid. Still acrid today until enough rain falls and then after that rainfall, you can see out to the mountains of San Diego for about 3 days before it smogs up again.

Raise a kid and get them into Stem and specifically Energy generation and Recycling. Children are the future, not because they're new humans but because they can make everything better when given the right education and a strong set of morals and values, even if they're values I dont agree with personally.

I actually worked as a programmer in the 90s. I actually had to go through and explain to the share holders that y2k was a farce made up by the news and by Hollywood. Hell. Even if it was real, it could have been fixed by just right-clicking the time in the bottom right corner and just making the computer think it was 1999 again.

It was fake, no programmer at the time thought it was real. Just like the dnd panic in the 80s, video games caused violence in the 90s, and rock and roll on the 60s.

There's a park in my hometown that floods when it rains and every time it rains people bellyache about how flooded the park is.
Thing is, my town is a temperate rainforest in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. It rains a lot here and in certain places it's *supposed* to flood. Well, plunk a city of a half a million people into an area that's ecologically supposed to flood and you're going to get some inconvenient puddles.
However, this park isn't an inconvenient puddle!! It was crafted to allow the flooding from the city center to flow to where it is naturally supposed to go with minimal disruption because it diverts water away from roadways and walkways and few people go to the park during a rainstorm.
I honestly am in such awe of the science and community effort. I want to be an engineer because of a flooding park.

Our success of solving problems with acid rain and the hole in the ozone layer needs to be more widely known. People look back and just see panic, then think that other looming crises are overblown. Truth is, environmental threats exist and they CAN be overcome if we make the effort.
