Raining in my heart
Acker Bilk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I left my heart in San Francisco.
High on a hill it calls to me
to be where little cable cars
climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air,
I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco,
above the blue and windy sea.
When I come home to you, San Francisco,
your golden sun will shine for me!

I left my heart in San Francisco.
High on a hill it calls to me
to be where little cable cars
climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air,
I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco,

above the blue and windy sea.
When I come home to you, San Francisco,

Overall Meaning

your golden sun will shine for me!

Acker Bilk's song In San Francisco tells the story of a person who left their heart in the city of San Francisco. The opening lines "I left my heart in San Francisco, high on a hill it calls to me" establish the strong emotional connection that the singer has with the city which is reflected in the song's title. They feel a strong pull towards the city, metaphorically represented as the heart being left behind. The line "to be where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars" talks about San Francisco's famous cable car system which takes people on a journey resembling that of soaring halfway up to the stars. It signifies the heights that the singer is willing to go to be with their love.

The use of the phrase, "The morning fog may chill the air, I don't care!" demonstrates that the singer is ready to face the challenges and adversities that come with being in San Francisco because their love is waiting for them there. The golden sun shining when they come home to San Francisco represents the love and warmth that they feel when they're with their partner. It's also a reflection of the beautiful city of San Francisco which has a very sunny climate.
