Dawn
Adam Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The dawn is red; the piper's morning call
With piercing tones aborts the deepest dreams
Less proud and jubilant than once it seemed
The sun is risen up and o'er the wall
Yet not a soul among us is redeemed
The dawn is red and hides the crimson stain
Which one and all we wear from head to toe
The waters of a newly-fallen foe
Whose field lay full and fresh with his remains
Whose final state sustains the grateful crows
The dawn is red; the captain leads the way
So onward then, beneath an open sky
In silence, each to reckon all his crimes
While heads and hearts hang low in guilt and shame
Our triumph here was traded for our pride

And though our bodies venture on their way
Our souls will ever dwell in yesterday

Overall Meaning

The lines in the first stanza of "Dawn" by Adam's song recount the morning after a battle on the battlefield. The singer speaks of the morning sun, but it is not a morning of redemption for them. They lament that after the previous day's events, there is not a soul among them who can be saved. The piper's call is piercing, and it seems to cut through the numbness and remind everyone sharply of the blood spilled the previous day. The dawn is crimson, and it hides the blood that each soldier wears head to toe. They may have been triumphant the previous day, but it was traded for their pride, which caused their hearts and heads to hang low in guilt and shame.

In the next stanza, the singer describes the fallen foe whose field is full of remains. The waters of the foe flow around their bodies, staining the ground crimson. The grateful crows are feeding on their remains, and the singer suggests that the fallen foes will not be remembered or celebrated. Then the captain leads the way, and the soldiers march on in silence, reckoning all their crimes. They know that their triumph was traded for pride and hubris, and even though their bodies might move on, their souls will forever dwell in yesterday.
