Green attended Emerson College briefly in 1998 before leaving to concentrate on his music, going on to co-found the anti folk group The Moldy Peaches with Kimya Dawson. In 2004 The Moldy Peaches went on hiatus and both Green and Dawson embarked on solo careers.
Green released several albums on Rough Trade Records. Among his better known songs are "Jessica" (about singer Jessica Simpson), "Novotel", "Friends of Mine", "Dance with Me", "Carolina" and "Emily", and, in Britain, his cover of The Libertines track "What a Waster".
Prior to Jacket Full of Danger in 2006, all of Green's albums had been released on the 22nd of the month. His latest album was released on March 18, 2008 and is titled Sixes & Sevens. Titles include "Morning After Midnight", "Twee Twee Dee", and "Drowning Head First", the latter a duet between Green and his girlfriend.
In January 2008, The Moldy Peaches began having a resurgence in popularity, due to their music being included in the hit indie film Juno.
11-Salty Candy
Adam Green Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Now I'm back at home
I want to live my life
In a bathtub
Roll a dirty dice
And you're playin' blood
Stole a maxipad
It reminds me of salty candy
Semen shanties
Sailboats grindin'
Up against your back
I don't need no sentimental
Penis stencil
Feelings rising
Opposites attract
She made me feel so small
I had no say at all
She looked so cute they say
But I don't know her that way
Heaven hold me back
Got 20 lives
Got my jesus jammies
Need some exercise
Take a walk at night
Past the dating bar
I want to live my life
Like a trackstar
Na, na na na na na Na, na na na na na
Na, na na na na na Na, na na na na na
Na, na na na na na Na, na na na na na
Na, na na na na na Na, na na na na na
The lyrics to Adam Green's song "11-Salty Candy" are complex and surreal, touching on themes of sexuality, loneliness, and a desire for freedom. The first verse seems to describe someone who is at the front of the line, perhaps waiting to enter a club or concert. But then they return home and wish to live their life in a bathtub, suggesting a desire for isolation and retreat from the world. The second line, "Roll a dirty dice / And you're playin' blood / Stole a maxipad / Because I abandoned love," is more ambiguous, but could be interpreted as a reference to sex, menstruation, and the complicated emotions that can arise in romantic relationships.
The chorus, "It reminds me of salty candy / Semen shanties / Sailboats grindin' / Up against your back," is the most enigmatic part of the song. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what it means, but it may be a metaphor for the conflicting, sometimes painful feelings that arise from sexual encounters. The salty candy could represent both the pleasure and the discomfort associated with sex, while the semen shanties and sailboats grinding imply a sense of friction and tension.
The second verse turns to a more personal narrative, with the singer describing feeling small and powerless in a relationship. They don't know the person well, but are still affected by their presence. The line "Heaven hold me back / Got 20 lives / Got my jesus jammies / Need some exercise" seems to be a non sequitur, but it could be interpreted as a reflection on the singer's desire for transcendence and freedom. Finally, the song ends with a call to take a walk at night and live life like a trackstar, which could suggest a longing for adventure and excitement.
Overall, "11-Salty Candy" is a highly atmospheric, lyrically dense song that leaves a lot open to interpretation. It touches on themes of isolation, sexuality, powerlessness, and desire for freedom, and does so in a way that is both surreal and poignant.
