Green attended Emerson College briefly in 1998 before leaving to concentrate on his music, going on to co-found the anti folk group The Moldy Peaches with Kimya Dawson. In 2004 The Moldy Peaches went on hiatus and both Green and Dawson embarked on solo careers.
Green released several albums on Rough Trade Records. Among his better known songs are "Jessica" (about singer Jessica Simpson), "Novotel", "Friends of Mine", "Dance with Me", "Carolina" and "Emily", and, in Britain, his cover of The Libertines track "What a Waster".
Prior to Jacket Full of Danger in 2006, all of Green's albums had been released on the 22nd of the month. His latest album was released on March 18, 2008 and is titled Sixes & Sevens. Titles include "Morning After Midnight", "Twee Twee Dee", and "Drowning Head First", the latter a duet between Green and his girlfriend.
In January 2008, The Moldy Peaches began having a resurgence in popularity, due to their music being included in the hit indie film Juno.
Who's Your Boyfriend
Adam Green Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I bet your boyfriend hates you most
I joke around but I don't look down
Because you could break my heart
Only you could break my heart
Only you could win my dreams back
From the man who writes prescriptions on post-it notes
I bet your boyfriend hates you most
Because you could break my heart
Only you could break my heart
Only you could win my dreams back from your girlfriend
Someone like me should not have a phone
Jumping the gun despite grief I've known
She will become someone I listen for nothing more
Into the hallway with you
The lyrics of Adam Green's Who's Your Boyfriend seem to be a combination of dark humour and heartbreak. The first few lines, "Who's your boyfriend on this coast? I bet your boyfriend hates you most" imply that the singer is speaking to someone who has multiple boyfriends or perhaps is in a complicated romantic situation. The line "I joke around but I don't look down" could be interpreted as the singer trying to maintain a lighthearted tone despite the emotional turmoil caused by this person.
The next few lines give a sense of vulnerability as the singer admits that this person has the power to break their heart. The lines "Only you could break my heart, Only you could win my dreams back" express a desperation and longing for that person's affection. The imagery of "the man who writes prescriptions on post-it notes" seems to imply that this person is romantically involved with someone in a position of authority or perhaps a healthcare professional.
The final lines, "Someone like me should not have a phone, Jumping the gun despite grief I've known, She will become someone I listen for nothing more, Into the hallway with you" give a sense of resignation as the singer acknowledges that they should not be in communication with this person, but they cannot help themselves. They listen to her voice despite knowing that nothing will come of it. Overall, the song seems to be about unrequited love or a toxic romantic relationship that is difficult to end.
